My thoughts on this volume (Slight Spoilers!)
I quickly became a huge fan of this author after reading their previous work, Sagesumu Shisen ga Saikou Desu / 蔑む視線が最高です. They have a talent for writing unique but still realistic settings for romance stories to take place in. Their art style is also unique enough that I’m sure I could pick a sketch they did out of a crowd of drawings, giving even more personality to their stories.
Sekai de Ichiban Ani Shiteru / 世界でいちばん兄してる is a story all about found family. After the first volume I was a tiny bit worried that the step-brother, Seki, would be given the role of male lead, but my fears were thankfully unwarranted. Instead, over the course of this volume, we get to see the why behind some of Seki’s more outrageous behaviours. Like, why is he so eager for Yori to call him her big brother? And why is he so excited at the prospect of having a younger sister as cute as Yori?—don’t worry, the reason ends up being very wholesome!
We learn about some of the traumas and abandonment issues both Seki and Yori have due to their absentee parents. Both of their personalities have been warped due to being left alone for long periods of time as children—Yori become quiet and obedient due to being all on her own and forced to take on responsibilities, and Seki became loud and flashy after befriending the delinquents who frequented his local convenience store. While they grew up to be very different people, they are able to relate to each others traumas. Seki only does a lot of his more outrageous actions because he’s afraid of being abandoned again, the poor guy!
There is still some romance in this volume for Yori, and it’s actually instigated by Seki! Yori has a childhood friend who clearly has feelings for her, and it’s through a lot of Seki’s meddling and advice that he is able to start making his feelings known. While Seki certainly can come off a bit off-putting at first, he really only has the best interests for Yori. He just wants his new sister to be happy and feel loved!
I was very sad to see this series come to an end at just two volumes (again!), but I was happy with the conclusion. I just hope the mangaka’s next series goes on a bit longer, I just love the concepts they come up with!
