And that phrase is… Yuuzuu ga kiku!

What does yuuzuu ga kiku mean?

As this is a phrase made up of two words, I’ll break them down separately.

融通・ゆうずう・yuuzuu

This word actually has two meanings: to loan (money), and to be flexible. For today’s lesson, we’re going to be utilizing the “flexible” meaning.

効く・きく・kiku

This word means to be effective, to be possible. For today’s lesson, we’re going to be utilizing the “possible” meaning.

融通が効く・ゆうずうがきく・yuuzuu ga kiku

When we put them together in a phrase, it comes to mean “to be flexible”. Flexible as in “can adapt to situations easily”, not “can move their body well”. Please take care not to mix the two up!

Example 1

English: Even though he’s busy, if it’s for me, he’ll change his schedule around. I like flexible people like him.

Romaji only: Kare wa isogashii no ni, watashi no tame nara yotei wo kaetekureru. Kare mitai ni yuuzuu ga kiku hito ga hontou ni suki.

Hiragana only: かれ　は　いそがしい　の　に、わたし　の　ため　なら　よてい　を　かえてくれる。かれ　みたい　に　ゆうずう　が　きく　ひと　が　ほんとう　に　すき。

Final: 彼は忙しいのに、私のためなら予定を変えてくれる。彼みたいに融通が効く人が本当に好き。

English: I’m fed up of your not being flexible. Could you loosen up just a little bit?

Romaji only: Anata no yuuzuu ga kikanai tokoro wa hontou ni akita. Sukoshi demo yurukushite kurenai kana?

Hiragana only: あなた　の　ゆうずう　が　きかない　ところ　は　ほんとう　に　あきた。すこし　でも　ゆるくして　くれない　かな？

Final: あなたの融通が効かないところは本当に飽きた。少しでも緩くしてくれないかな？

Example 3

English: It would be nice if the homeroom teacher is flexible. I’m bad at meeting deadlines for one…

Romaji only: Tan’nin no sensei wa yuuzuu ga kiku to ii desu ne… Watashi wa shimekiri ni ma ni au no ga heta desu shi…

Hiragana only: たんいん　の　せんせい　は　ゆうずう　が　きく　と　いい　です　ね。わたし　は　しめきり　に　ま　に　あう　の　が　へた　です　し。。。

Final: 担任の先生は融通が効くといいですね。私は締切に間に合うのが下手ですし。。。

Example 4

English: When the employees are struggling, our boss adjusts the schedule without complaint. Having a boss that’s this flexible, I’m so lucky.

Romaji only: Ten’in ga komatteiru toki, kachou wa itsumo monku wo iwazauni sukeju-ru wo chousei shitekureru. kon’nani yuuzuu ga kiku kachou ga iru nante, rakki- da na.

Hiragana only: てんいん　が　こまっている　とき、かちょう　は　いつも　もんく　を　いわずに　スクジュール　を　ちょうせい　してくれる。こんなに　ゆうずう　が　きく　かちょう　が　いる　なんて、ラッキー　だ　な。

Final: 店員が困っている時、課長はいつも文句を言わずにスケジュールを調整してくれる。こんなに融通が効く課長がいるなんて、ラッキーだな。

Example 5

English: We were originally supposed to go to the aquarium, but the moment we met up I realized I really wanted to go to the amusement park.

Romaji only: Motomoto suizokukan ni iku yotei datta kedo, shuugou shita totan ni yuuenchi ni ikitakunacchatta. Kareshi wa yuuzuu ga kiku hito dakara, yuuenchi made tsukiatte kureta.

Hiragana only: もともと　すいぞくかん　に　いく　よてい　だった　けど、しゅうごう　した　とたん　に　ゆうえんち　に　いきたくなっちゃった。かれし　は　ゆうずう　が　きく　ひと　だから、ゆうえんち　まで　つきあって　くれた。

Final: もともと水族館に行く予定だったけど、集合した途端に遊園地に行きたくなっちゃった。彼氏は融通が効く人だから、遊園地まで付き合ってくれた。
