When her childhood friend Koumori moves away, Riku resolves to become a person who can stand on her own. Six years later, now a high school student, she has progressed from a quiet girl without any friends to one beloved by most of her classmates. Just as she’s wondering if Koumori has also changed in these six years, a new transfer student is introduced to her class—it’s Koumori!? He’s a little different now: the once angelic boy now looks closer to a demon. Just what happened during those six years they spent apart!?

Chapter one review

My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)

This was a wild ride! Koumori is a stereotypical “obsessive male lead” right from his introduction. He clearly doesn’t care about anyone or anything besides Riku, and he makes that loud and clear. He even forgoes introducing himself to the class to say “I’m home!” to Riku! His introduction does a good job of showing exactly what type of character he is.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of his personality, as I found his obsessive nature to be something that would eventually hinder Riku’s social standing—something she’s worked diligently on the six years they spent apart. He hangs around her all hours of the day and snaps at anyone who tries to interrupt their alone time. They’re together the entire school day, and he clearly wants the entire day to be nothing but alone time for the two of them.

He doesn’t seem to think too much of what Riku wants at first, as she is clearly upset with him being so antisocial. While he retorts all of her concerns with reminders that she’s the only friend he needs in his life, it clearly doesn’t do much to stop her from worrying. I would be marginally okay with him hogging all her time if he was only stopping her from speaking with her male classmates, but he’s putting up a wall between her and everyone else. To the point that we only see her speak to her female friend when they’re alone in the washroom together—somewhere Koumori can’t enter.

Of course, the obsessive romance is the entire point of this story! I can’t fault an obsessive boy for being obsessive. As he grows more adjusted to his new life back in Japan, and as Riku works hard to integrate him into their class, he does mellow out a tiny bit. He’s still as obsessive as ever, but at the very least he replies to his classmates questions by the end of the volume.

As for the romance, I really enjoyed it!! While he spends the whole time being crazy about Riku, there are several moments in the volume where things suddenly get a little bit darker, and just a tiny bit more intense…leading to some very good scenes! The relationship progression is quite fast, and Riku seems to be very welcoming of Koumori and all of his big emotions. With everything that happened in this volume, I can only imagine how the rest of the story will go…
