It’s time for our daily Japanese vocabulary! It’s important to study a little bit every day, so let’s work hard to remember one new word every single day.

Today’s word is… yappari!

~ Please remember that I use a mix of formal and casual Japanese in these posts! I use the type of language often found in shoujo manga~

What does yappari mean?

Yappari is an adverb that can be translated into English as: as expected, just as one thought.

The Kanji, it’s meaning, and it’s reading in hiragana

While yappari is almost exclusively written in hiragana, we can use kanji to write it like this: 矢っ張り.

We can write “yappari” using hiragana like this: やっぱり. This is how it’s typically written.

Let’s try using やっぱり・yappari in a sentence!

Example 1

English: Just as I had thought, if it’s not you it’s no good.

Romaji only: Yappari, kimi janai to dame nan da.

Hiragana only: やっぱり、きみ　じゃない　と　だめ　なん　だ。

Final: やっぱり、君じゃないとダメなんだ。

Example 2

English: As expected, they already have a girlfriend…

Romaji only: Yappari, mou kanojo ga irunda…

Hiragana only: やっぱり、もう　かのじょ　が　いるんだ。。。

Final: やっぱり、もう彼女がいるんだ。。。

Example 3

English: As I thought, I can’t beat her…

Romaji only: Yappari, kanojo ni wa kanawanai…

Hiragana only: やっぱり、かのじょ　に　は　かなわない。。。

Final: やっぱり、彼女には敵わない。。。

Example 4

English: As thought, there’s nothing to do but break up.

Romaji only: Yappari, wakareru shika nai yo ne.

Hiragana only: やっぱり、わかれる　しか　ない　よ　ね。

Final: やっぱり、別れるしかないよね。

Example 5

English: I tried hard to hide my feelings for him but, as expected it was in vain.

Romaji only: Ganbatte kare e no kimochi o kakusou to shita kedo, yappari dame desu.

Hiragana only: かんばって　かれ　へ　の　きもち　を　かくそう　と　した　けど、やっぱり　だめ　です。

Final: 頑張って彼への気持ちを隠そうとしたけど、やっぱりダメです。
