What’s the series about? (chapter one spoilers!)
Hinagiku is the daughter of a temple in a town where there is definitive proof that the gods exist. Despite there being no lack of believers, her temple family’s temple isn’t as popular as the ones surrounding it. She doesn’t put much thought into it, as when she heads home from school, there’s only room for one topic in her brain: Kanzaki. That’s the name of the man who is trusted to work in the temple’s most secretive area. Just as kind as he is handsome, he helps Hinagiku learn to dance when she comes to visit him while on errands.
Just as she’s about to leave his side for the day, she trips and falls…only to be caught by a man with horns growing out of his head! Not only that, this mysterious man looks exactly like Kanzaki!? Bewitched at the sight, she reaches out and touches his horns. While it’s not exactly clear what supernatural event was triggered by her touch, her heart quickly feels like it’s being squeezed, her whole body breaks down with a fever, and a sigil appears on her chest. The only way to calm down her symptoms seems to be through a kiss from the horned Kanzaki!?
My thoughts on this chapter (spoilers for chapter one)
I too am bewitched by the horned Kanzaki!
It’s mentioned at the start of the chapter that the gods have been known to take on human appearances at times to mingle with humans, but we’re never clearly shown what the gods look like in their godly forms. Typically when a horned character appears, I assume them to be an ogre rather than a god, but perhaps Kanzaki is just the first horned god I’ve come to meet. Or, maybe, he isn’t a god at all but some other supernatural being!
Hinagiku’s family seems to have an understanding of supernatural beings, as after she met one when she was a child, her grandmother warned her to never touch one’s horns. Advice she clearly forgot upon becoming a teenager.
I think the authors did a fantastic job of setting up the story, as I am so excited to read on! We got a taste of several elements that I’m sure the story will continue to explore in the coming volumes. I want to share what I’m more hopeful to see more of:
♡ Hinagiku’s mother — While I’ve noticed temple parents tend to be portrayed as overly strict in manga, I found her mother to just be far too mean. When she called Hinagiku no good and told her she should forever give up learning to dance just because she was five minutes late for a meeting, I was so upset! Hinagiku was so young, and was clearly out of breath from trying to be on time. I hope there’s some sort of explanation or redemption for the mother character, as in this chapter she’s only depicted as getting mad at Hinagiku and her sister, causing both to run away at different times!
♡ “The most handsome” childhood friend — you can’t introduce a character who has the nickname of “the most handsome” and not give him ample time on the page! I assume he is going to be the third male lead in the story judging on how he acted with Hinagiku in this chapter, but regardless I want to see more of him.
♡ Kanzaki — Is he actually a god!? Why is he moving into Hinagiku’s family house all of a sudden!? Does her family know that he’s actually a supernatural being? Maybe he’s the god of the shrine and everyone but Hinagiku knows? I just have so many questions about him! He’s not so mysterious and under-explained that its frustrating thankfully, he’s instead a character that clearly has a lot hidden under the surface.
