My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
This volume had my opinions ping-ponging in my head. I disliked Kikyou’s forced fiance from the moment he was introduced, and watching him aggressively pursue Kikyou in this volume just put a bad taste in my mouth. He knows she likes Hanayagi but still refuses to let her out of the forced engagement because he wants to try to make her fall for him—like just give up already, please!
But then, about halfway through this volume, he gets a tiny bit of a redemption. By tiny bit I do mean a sliver, I’m never forgetting how he offered to let Kikyou and Hanayagi be lovers after he forcefully marries her. We learn a bit about his situation through Hanayagi’s eyes, and it turns out his situation is a bit more pitiful than previously thought. While the engagement is indeed something he himself caused, his personal situation doesn’t allow him to call it off. So, he wants to work to make Kikyou fall in love with him so she can be happy once they get married.
In my eyes, he really is just a hindrance. I know I should feel bad for him after seeing how his life is at his big lonely mansion…but I just can’t. He knew Kikyou was in love with Hanayagi before he forced the engagement, and continuously makes references to it, almost like he’s taunting her. Honestly, I don’t think he even likes her—what will happen 20 years after they get married? Say he does succeed in making Kikyou fall in love with him, can he pretend to be in love with her for the rest of her life? She would be even more unhappy staying in love with someone who doesn’t love her back!
All the hindrances the fiance causes allows Hanayagi to shine extra bright, making this an exciting read. You never know when a good Hanayagi scene is coming as he’s so sneaky with it, so I was on my toes every time he made an appearance. Even in the non-romantic scenes, watching Hanayagi stick up to the fiance was so nice to see! Although in the social hierarchy the fiance is technically above him, Hanayagi has no problem politely telling him to back off.
