What’s the series about? (chapter one spoilers!)

The granddaughter of a Yakuza family decides to pick up a stray boy one day. Though she only intended to patch up his wounds, he decides to stay if she’ll have him. The boy, aptly named “Stray”, is very fearful of the Yakuza-filled compound at first, but quickly grows to be fond of the girl who saved him, Akira.

The life of the only daughter of a Yakuza family seems to be a lonely one, as Akira does everything by herself. Though she does have personnel assigned to her, they seem to only be there to make sure she doesn’t run away, not to make sure she’s living a satisfying life. Stray seems to be the only one who genuinely cares about bringing some light into her life. He spends his time there making sure she never has to do anything by herself again—be it eating, talking a walk, or even sleeping.

He grows so protective over his saviour so quickly, he even attacks her employees when he catches them talking poorly about her. Akira, touched that someone stood up for her for the first time in her life, finally has a heart to heart with the boy she saved, and earns enough of his trust to learn his true name, officially making him a part of her family.

My thoughts on this chapter

As I love both Yakuza and delinquent romance series, there was no way I wasn’t going to enjoy this one. Our protagonist Akira is the only granddaughter of a Yakuza family, but seems to be treated rather poorly by all the employees that live in her compound. This is a rather different setup from what I’m used to, as typically characters in her situation are treated with a great amount of respect. Think Reincarnated in a Mafia Dating Sim or A Girl and Her Guard Dog. Both leads in these stories are treated as close to actual family. This series though, is rather different.

The more I read this chapter, the worse I felt for Akira. The employees in her house openly disrespect her when they think she can’t hear, the guards only care that she’s physically present, and no one seems to care about whether she’s happy or not. Because of all this, I was so happy to see Stray genuinely care about her. I was a bit confused about why they were so keen on kicking him out—I mean, don’t they work for Akira and her actual family? Shouldn’t her desires triumph theirs? It really feels like she’s a prisoner in her own house.
