Info about this series (ongoing)

This is a newer series, with three chapters out in Japanese.

What’s the series about? (chapter one spoilers!)

There is nothing Kaoru dislikes more than a guy who puts on a front. Take her ex-boyfriend for example: after she catches him cheating on her, he grovels on his knees as he begs her not to leave him. The next day at school, she overhears him him at school bragging to his friends about how she grovelled on her knees, begging him not to break up with her—what!?

As she’s being pestered by some boys at school, the most popular boy in school, Hoshino, comes to her rescue. Rather than thank him, she tells off all the boys involved in the situation and storms off. Hoshi thought claiming to be her boyfriend would be the quickest way to scare off the boys, but to Kaoru, he was putting up a front more than anyone.

After spending the whole day in anger about dumb boys acting tough, Kaoru is asked by a teacher to move some things to a storage room. As she enters the room, she’s met with a boy curled up and crying on the ground—Hoshino!? It turns out that he really has been putting up a big act, as in secret he’s terrified of being seen as nothing more than a pretty face.

Now that Kaoru has had a glimpse at the real Hoshino, for some reason she just can’t get him out of her head.

My thoughts on this chapter

I found this to be a very fun chapter! Hoshino’s character was very likable from the start. Though he is indeed putting up a front like the rest of the boys, even when he’s acting, he’s still being a good guy. He’s kind to all of his classmates, and goes out of his way to help people he doesn’t know. Learning about his big secret just made him all the more likable in my eyes.

We learn his backstory very quickly in this chapter—he used to be seen as just a pretty face at his old school, which destroyed his self-esteem. As he’s very quick to cry, any negative attention towards him would make him burst into tears, causing more negative attention toward him. He decides to work hard so that no one can ever refer to him as “just a pretty face” again, and it’s paying off! He spends hours practicing sports at home so he can appear effortless in front of his classmates. While sure, this may be seen as putting up a front, I don’t see anything wrong with it.

I was glad to see Kaoru eventually cool off when it comes to him. I think she’s quick to anger because she’s been scorned so many times, so I couldn’t fault her for disliking Hoshino at first. Once she realizes he’s genuinely a good person, she’s kind to him! I think the two of them are just perfect together.
