My thoughts on this volume (Slight Spoilers!)

I tend to be a big fan of the volumes that focus on a variety of the mysteries who live in the school, so it’s safe to say I really enjoyed this volume! While I always enjoy meeting the new mysteries alongside Nene, there’s something nice about checking in on the mysteries we’ve already gotten to know.
I was forewarned that this series gets to be rather dark and depressing, and I believe that this is the volume that first really foreshadows this. Through the reappearance of a character that is technically dead, we are given another glimpse into the craziness that is Hanako’s younger brother, Tsukasa. He continues to be the biggest mystery in the story…but is he technically one of the seven mysteries of the school? I have a hunch that his shenanigans are what will bring the darker plot points going forward.
Regardless of what he’s classified as, mystery or not there’s no doubt he’s dangerous. While all the mysteries we have met up until this point have had their own special reasons for doing malvioent things, it’s still unclear why Tsukasa does what he does. Even though this is a series full of various horrific characters and situations, Tsukasa is the most terrifying character by a long shot—he really seems to have no qualms with killing anyone and anything if the mood strikes him.
I am curious to learn exactly what happened between him and Hanako when they both died, and whether Hanako did in fact actually kill him. Honestly, if I had a brother like Tsukasa I don’t think I would be able to handle it either. He flips between carefree and murderous at seemingly no provocation at all, making him an rather difficult person to deal with. I still haven’t gotten over what he did to that goldfish…
So, having said all that, I was very surprised to see what he did in this volume! We were granted a glimpse at what his powers can do, and were even shown a potentially kind side of him. At least, I believe it was kind by his standards. I’m very excited to see where the new member of his group goes from here, and whether he will be able to regain any of his memories with that book Kou gave him. I’m also curious to see exactly how Tsukasa and Hanako’s powers differ, and why they both have that seal on their cheek. I’m just full of questions!
My favourite parts of this volume (Spoilers!)
🖤 Poor Nene being tortured by being called “daikon legs’ by everyone in the mirror torture room.
🖤 Hanako and Kou desperately trying to force themselves through the same mirror Nene was sucked through, and even praying to the barrier keeper to let them in. I love how protective both of them are of her!
🖤 Tsukasa treating Mitsuba almost like a puppy—it felt out of character for both of them, but I really like their strange relationship!
🖤 Yako finally warming up to Kou!?
🖤 Tsukasa and Hanako’s little reunion! Tsukasa throws me off-guard with just about everything he does, but it was still cute watching him get so excited to see his brother.
🖤 Mitsuba being terrified of Hanako’s knife even after becoming the most powerful person in the room.
🖤 Mitsuba still protecting Nene even during all that craziness—the poor boy just wants to be human again!
