Hana-kun Can’t Live Without Me / ヒモクズ花くんは死にたがり – Volume Four Manga Review

Both Hana and Kaede clearly have romantic feelings for each other, but that doesn’t mean they both have the best of intentions. While Kaede clearly is looking for something that can slowly develop as time goes on, Hana seems to want someone to fall with him right here, right now.

My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)

If you’re in the mood for an entertaining story with an absolutely insane male lead, this is the manga for you. Hana continues to be a mystery in this volume, but we see him willingly share information about himself with Kaede, unprompted! While in a normal relationship this would be an expected everyday occurrence, Hana and Kaede’s relationship is anything but.

While part of Hana’s intrigue is the mystery that surrounds him, learning bits and pieces about the (potentially) real him feels like a treat. Even little insignificant bits of information become all the more interesting when you’re dealing with a closed book after all.

While both Hana and Kaede are very damaged and co-dependant people, I actually do like them together. While we know a lot more about Kaede than Hana at this point, it’s clear she has needed someone on her side for a while now. I’m still unsure what to think of her brother come this point, so I’m choosing to believe that she really has been ostracised by most of the people she sees on a day to day basis. That would break just about anyone, so it’s not difficult to understand why she was so quick to become dependant on Hana.

Hana on the other side… is still a complete mystery. To me, it still looks like he was hopping from place to place, looking for someone to connect with until he found Kaede. Maybe he was always looking for “his person”, and now he’s finally found her? This would explain some of his darker attributes like stalking, surveilling, and secretly entering her house—he just wants to make sure that his person is safe! What a good guy.

Going back to the people that exist near Kaede—her coworker continues to get on my nerves in this volume. I really can’t stand the type of woman who pushes other women down just to help themselves get ahead. Whatever happened to girl code? Whatever happened to it’s rude to tell your coworkers that you hate them while at work? So, when she does what she does in this volume, I could only see it as malicious—why would someone give advice and say they hate you in the same breath? She clearly has some underlying scheme at play.

Thanks to her meddling though, we were able to learn something new about Hana…and my goodness was it a big piece of information. I was proud of how Kaede handled the ongoing situation of people trying to share Hana’s private information with her. Even when abused, she is able to keep her morals! No matter how much you may want to know something about someone, you should wait for the person in question to tell you themselves. That way there’s no bias, and no potential lies being spread around—way to go Kaede!
