What’s this series about?
Serafina is a saint born into a kingdom where her whole life has been decided for her. As she has been told time and time again that a saint’s only role is to serve her country, she obediently goes along with the “guidance” of the royal family. This guidance goes beyond mere suggestions and mentoring, as she is eventually forced to marry the kingdom’s hero.
At first Serafina isn’t all that against a loveless marriage. She at first believed that as the hero had a similar upbringing to her—one devoid of choices—they could find camaraderie in each other. Sadly, the hero seems to enjoy not having to think for himself. Worse, he also enjoys belittling Serafina for not taking the time to make herself more beautiful for him.
Mere hours after their wedding ceremony concludes, the hero leaves Serafina to her own devices to spend quality time with one of the kingdom’s princesses. Defeated, Serafina goes to bed alone…where she is startled awake by the sight of her new husband on top of her. He explains that they can still sleep together even if they don’t particularly love each other, and attempts to do as he pleases even as Serafina protests. Fed up with this life, Serafina then delivers a mighty saint punch right into his stomach, demands a divorce, and runs away.
She runs and runs until her legs take her to the entrance of the demon lord’s territory where she promptly passes out. Days later, she wakes up in the bed of the demon king!? It turns out that the demon king is actually a pretty nice guy, and his servants and friends at his manor treat Serafina far better than anyone in the kingdom ever has. Could this be the life that she has been longing for? Is a saint allowed to wish for a happy life together with the demon lord?
My thoughts on this volume (Slight Spoilers!)
A saint whose healing magic does nothing to help save her from a life devoid of choices, and a demon king with ferocious attack magic that endangers the lives of those he loves.
What an interesting setup for a story, oh my goodness! We’re first introduces to the saint, Serafina. All throughout the first chapter, the amount of pent up anger she has continues growing until she can no longer take it, culminating in an attack on the prince. As the saint’s job is to protect, not injure, this attack has a reverse effect on her—not even her own powers allow her a chance of happiness. She was stuck in a situation with absolutely no way of protecting herself, and no person to advocate for her.
She needs a way to protect herself.
The demon king’s situation is quite opposite to Serafina’s. His grandious power is known far and wide, drawing in adventurers from all over the world. Time and time again, people would sneak into his territory and injure not only him, but also the people he loves. As his powers only allow him to attack, he can do nothing to help those that were attacked for no good reason. He eventually puts a seal on his powers to try and stop the adventurers from sneaking in, but even this isn’t all that effective.
He needs a way to protect others.
The two of them meeting felt like fate! Serafina begins growing into herself quickly upon waking up in his castle, as it’s the first time in her life she can choose what she wants to do. Things do move rather quickly after she wakes up, as she’s only granted a bowl of soup—the first warm meal she’s ever had—before the demon king is forced into battle. This warm bowl of soul is a lot more important that would seem at first glance, as it both metaphorically and literally begins melting her frozen resolve.
We quickly learn about the history of the demon king and the human adventurers, and Serafina is forced to make her first big choice: run away and live a new life, or stay and help the demon king. As he was the first being to ever show her genuine kindness, I wasn’t surprised when she opted to stay. I was surprised by what happened not long after she made that decision!
She stumbles upon the demon king, weakened after luring the adventurers away from the manor where his loved ones live. He says a heartfelt goodbye as he clearly thinks he is going to die, but Serafina pours enough of her power into him that she is able to save his life. She actually pours all of her power into him, and at the same time somehow sucks his demon powers up. That is, they somehow swap powers!
As soon as she discovers what has happened, she is given a chance to put her new demon powers to the test, and it’s like they were made for her. Watching her float up in the sky, declaring herself not at kind as the demon king..! Oh I shudder just thinking about it, she was so cool!
The demon lord in this world isn’t some big scary creature. He is simply the king of his own domain. He doesn’t start wars, nor does he kidnap and plunder. It seems as though the humans from the kingdom want to topple him for a variety of selfish reasons—glory, fame, even money, perhaps. It truly seems like the humans are the bad guy of this story, as when Serafina is discovered by a few adventurers in the demon territory, the adventurers quickly become excited at the idea of kidnapping such a beautiful girl. Disgusting.
Now that Serafina is there to support the king, and with a grudge against the humans who have wronged her, hopefully things will be smooth sailing from here.
