My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
This volume left me with one thought post-read: someone needs to confess already. While I know the whole premise of this series revolves around the fact that neither Akari nor Mikage can confess their feelings, I’ve begun getting antsy.
To be fair, I have been really enjoying watching their relationship progress over the first three volumes. Both of them are so cool when left on their own, yet so adorably awkward when put together. The fact that both of them have this gap makes the story all the more fun to read, as no matter what type of interaction they have, you can bet they’re both blushing on the inside.
Volume three primarily focuses on their school sports festival. Once it’s discovered that Akari likes boys who can run really fast, it becomes an intense competition between Mikage and Yura—that’s right, there’s a love triangle. Yura was by far my favourite part of this volume. While Akari and Mikage are busy struggling to hide their feelings, Yura is out there shouting out his love for his interests.
I had initially thought that Yura’s introduction as a love interest would spark a light in Mikage, but sadly it wasn’t enough to make him confess. While we do see his jealousy cause him to be extra flirty with Akari, it came out in the form of “don’t show any other boys this side of you” not “I like you”. Honestly, it was such a childish thing to say that it almost turned me off his character. I prefer the characters that can suck it up and admit their feelings, no matter how embarrassing! Asking for boyfriend privileges without asking to be the boyfriend is just taking the coward’s way out.
Thankfully, Mikage did win me back over before the volume ended, as it’s clear that Yura’s straightforwardness is having an effect on him. We finally see Mikage work up the courage to genuinely compliment Akari without any humour laced in! While he still pales in comparison to Yura, I appreciate the effort. It’s easy to joke around about your feelings when things start getting a little to real; it’s not all that easy to tell a girl you genuinely think she’s pretty.
In volume four, I’m going to need Mikage and Akari to at least attempt to talk about their feelings. They story can only progress so far without the two of them dating!
