My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
This series was actually the first Dessert series I ever read, and I finally got my hands on the physical version! I first read it digitally on my Kindle, but I enjoyed it so much that I had been hoping to add the physicals to my collection for a few years now.
My favourite thing about this series is how realistically Serina and Mizukawa’s relationship is depicted. Seina is a bit of a hopeless romantic, falling for Mizukawa after barely knowing him for a day. When she finally musters up the courage to invite him out for karaoke after school, it’s not a surprise when he says no—he doesn’t know her. It isn’t until she opens herself up to him that he decides to take a chance and date her despite not knowing the first thing about her.
The scene where they being dating is actually one of my favourite confession scenes in a high school romance! Mizukawa says no at first because again, they don’t know each other, but then abruptly changes his mind. If they were to potentially date for the next 70 years of their lives, the first 10 minutes of their relationship really doesn’t matter in comparison, right? He says. While Seina is the more romantic one in the relationship, Mizukawa really does have his moments!
They begin dating as little more than strangers—Serina actually has to remind him of her name after becoming his girlfriend. As they really don’t know the first thing about the other, they are both extra careful around each other. Mizukawa is a more aloof and awkward character so it’s a bit difficult to see his efforts at first, but he is trying just as hard as Serina is!
I know it can be easy to write quick-to-start romances off, but personally, I find that this series in particular shines because of how fast they start dating. For example, for their first date, they were going to go out after school. When she arrived at their meeting spot however, she found Mizukawa fast asleep. She noticed he wrote a note saying “you absolutely must wake me up” prior to falling asleep, but she was still conflicted. While she didn’t know him all that much yet, she did know that he was working nights to pay off a bike he and his friends broke. She wanted to go on the date, but she also wanted to be a good girlfriend..but she wasn’t exactly sure what type of girl that was yet. So what does she do? She lets him sleep and secretly fixes the bike herself.
Through her internal monologue and actions, we can see just what kind of person Serina is. Sure her prime motivating factor is Mizukawa throughout all of this, but she never actually took credit for anything. All he knew at the time was that she let him sleep through their date. It isn’t until quite a while later that he realizes she fixed the bike for him, and he realizes that he now really has to make up for sleeping through their date. Serina isn’t the only one carrying the weight of being a thoughtful person in this relationship, I just really like this example to show what kind of person she is. Mizukawa also has his moments to shine!
While the story focuses purely on their romance, it’s just so nice to read a story where the romance leads people to do good things for each other!
