Boukyakugo no Alethia / 忘却後のアレーティア, Chapter One Manga Review

Alethia is one of the best oblivion magic users. She can make others forget just about anything, from the fact that she stole their beer that morning, to the taste of bitter berries. Such a power could be deadly if it were to fall into the wrong hands.

What’s the series about? (chapter one spoilers!)

Alethia is a magic knight residing in the country of Adlard. Once a girl who lived knowing she would never remain in anyone’s memory, she now is a member of the most elite class of magic knights. This is all thanks to being picked up by her group leader, Kristof.

While Alethia tends to use her magic for her own benefit, she possesses such a rare and powerful type of magic that she’s well with the trouble she brings. This special magic is called “oblivion magic”, or, memory-erasing magic. From the taste of certain foods to her absence in morning lectures, there’s nothing that she can’t erase. The only person she has difficulty completely fooling is her group leader, Kristof.

The two of them have a special relationship that the other members of the group can’t seem to grasp—while they’re not quite in a romantic relationship, they do look rather flirty together. Though, if you were to listen in on their conversations, more often than not he’s rebuking her for her inappropriate usage of oblivion magic.

One day, a group of mysterious wizards suddenly take Kristof hostage and make a demand of Alethia: erase yourself from everyone’s minds, or Kristof dies. Alethia, having no choice, obliges.

As Kristof was the one person who could always see Alethia, she held onto hope that perhaps a part of him would remember her. Even if he couldn’t place exactly who she was, at the very least he would remember her fondly, she hoped. Sadly, as soon as the magic takes effect, he sees her as the villain who was holding him hostage—he completely forgets about her.

My thoughts on this chapter (spoilers for chapter one)

I love a good Sora manga, and this was no exception. Both the art and the storytelling was absolutely phenomenal, but I wasn’t ready for it to get as depressing as it did. Perhaps because I’m still reading Haijin Kyoushi to Tsuiraku JK, but I’m more accustomed to Sora’s unique dark comedy style of writing. This story is by no means a comedy.

The first 75% of the chapter focuses on Alethia and Kristof’s relationship, so I assume the rest of the story will focus on how Alethia eventually gets him to remember her. The two of them had such a meaningful, delicate relationship that I could have cried when he forgot about her. Especially when he made that promise to tell her something once he did remember her, seconds before the spell was cast. Like, why not just tell her before!? He just caused that much more misery onto her!

After she casts the spell, she makes a comment about how she’s now all out of magic. The way she said it was a bit vague, and it’s uncertain whether she meant “I’m currently out of magic after casting such a huge spell and need to recharge” or “I’m all out of magic power forever”. If it’s the latter, she will no doubt have a very difficult time reminding Kristof of who she is. Who would believe someone who claims to have used incredibly powerful oblivion magic if they can’t even prove they can use magic in the moment?

In the first place, Kristof only picked Alethia up all those years ago because of her rare and powerful magic—it’s the very thing that sparked his interest in her. If she no longer has it, I worry about whether she’ll be able to spark any interest in him again. Judging by how he treats her at the end of the chapter, she really needs something to catch his attention in a positive way…
