What’s the series about? (chapter one spoilers!)

Natsuki (24) has the absolute worst luck with men. Maybe it’s because she chooses them based on their looks; maybe it’s because she blindly believes all the niceties they spout when they first start dating, but they almost always end up cheating on her in the end. The only one consistently positive male relationship she has, is that with her childhood friend Shouya (22).

Although he’s only one year younger than her, he has always been quick to come to her rescue. Even as children, he would be the one to bandage up her wounds. Now as adults, this helpfulness has turned into protectiveness, and he tries to knock some sense into her. He tries to gently coax her into looking beyond good looks when she searches for a boyfriend when she has an epiphany. Shouya is so handsome that it caused her “good-looks scale” to go haywire. So, the next time she finds a potential boyfriend, she’s going to have Shouya meet with him to determine whether he’s actually a good guy or not.

A potentially foolproof plan, but will Shouya actually go along with it?

My thoughts on this chapter (spoilers for chapter one)

I found this chapter to be a good setup for the story to come! It establishes Natsuki and Shouya as two childhood friends who know everything about each other. They are so comfortable around each other that Shouya has no problem wiping food off Natsuki’s face when they’re eating together. While this wasn’t the longest chapter, the little interactions we’re shown between the two of them paint a vivid picture.

While the story has yet to allude to either of them having romantic feelings for the other, I can see Shouya being the first to come to realize his feelings. While Natsuki already sees him as attractive, I’m not sure if there’s any actual attraction just yet.

Judging purely on what we see of Shouya in this chapter, I don’t think he will be doing anything calculating or toxic to get what he wants. Like, when Natsuki eventually does bring a guy around for him to judge, I feel like he will do his due diligence and give his honest opinion whether he wants to or not. He truly gives off “kind older brother-type childhood friend” vibes, even though technically he’s younger than Natsuki. There’s nothing sneaky or off-putting about him, what you see is what you get! Such an honest, straightforward person is exactly what Natsuki needs after being cheated on so many times… But she needs to come to that realization for herself before anything can happen.
