My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)

While I quickly became a fan of this series when I first picked up volume one, volume two improves upon everything volume one did and then some. I found the comedy to be more to my taste, the girl’s relationship to be a bit deeper, and Kirio’s character to be much more interesting. We also are introduced to a new side character that really shakes things up for the girls.

While this is a comedy series, that doesn’t mean it’s incapable of getting emotional. That being said, I very much was not expecting it to get as emotional as it did. Although it was an emotional gut punch, I was very glad the author chose to include that scene. Even in a comedy series, if things stay lighthearted and silly the whole time, things can quickly feel stale. Good stories need to have emotional flow to keep readers engaged, in my opinion.

The end of volume one had me highly doubting either girl actually had any feelings for Kirio, and this volume half-confirms what I was thinking. Through the girls joking around and trying to use both magic and science to force Kirio to fall in love with them, we learn one truth—one of the girls doesn’t actually like Kirio. At least, that’s how I interprited it.

While it may seem like a betrayal for a member of the Kirio fan club to not have feelings for Kirio, it actually makes the story all the more touching. She knows her friend has feelings for Kirio, and has fun being weird about Kirio with her. It really doesn’t matter in the end if she actually likes him or not.

Come the end of this volume we also get confirmation that the second half of the Kirio fan club does actually have feelings for Kirio, but that she had lied about when she developed them. This is where it gets sad, so buckle up. In volume one, she lied and said that she first fell in love with Kirio when she saw him hit his head on the desk while picking up an eraser—a harmless white lie. In actuality, she fell in love with him before they started school, at the hospital. We’re then given a flashback to a Kirio we’ve never seen before, laughing to the point of tears while visiting someone. Aimi just happened to be walking by the room at the moment and became smitten. The Kirio we see at school is a quiet, somewhat awkward boy. Someone we never see smile let alone laugh so…what happened?

Just like in the previous volume, we never actually get a full look at Kirio’s face. This really isn’t a story about Kirio, but a story about Aimi and Nami’s friendship as they bond over Kirio. While it’s confirmed that one of them actually has feelings for him, it doesn’t change the fact that this is a story about friendship. That’s exactly what makes this such a beautiful story—we need more manga about female friendship! I’m so tired of female rivalry, and stories where women betray each other just for a chance to talk to a boy.
