My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
Though I tend to avoid rom-coms, and series with over exaggerated facial expressions, I adored this volume! While there is some body humour and jokes dependant on facial expression, they blended into the story-telling seamlessly. In fact, I feel like had the author toned it down, the story would have suffered for it.
This series follows our protagonist, the 10th grader Akari. After being in a near-death accident as a child, she now wants to live her every day to the fullest…but she’s terrified that another disaster may strike at any moment. So though she wants to go out and do things, she tends to spend most of her time in the safety of her house.
Luckily though, her younger brother’s best friend is often waiting for her at her house. Little does he know, Akari has been madly in love with them since she first spoke to him. As she doesn’t want to break their fragile relationship, she chooses to savor their every interaction rather than confess to him. Little does she know, but he’s also been madly in love with her ever since he first spoke to her.
So, this is a story about two somewhat oblivious people that are in love with the other. Both of them are constantly trying to preserve their relationship while also keeping their emotions in check.
Personally I found the boy, Mikage’s, character to be the most entertaining. He comes off as very cool and collected, so when it’s revealed that he’s so in love with Akari he physically can’t handle it…well it was a bit of a shock.
There are many scenes of the the two of them having a seemingly normal conversation, only for them to freak out about whatever the other said once alone. These types of interactions especially shined when Mikage was expressing his big feelings to his friend (Akari’s brother).
