Chapter One Description
When Riko was in middle school, she fell in love with high schooler Kaito at first sight. She claims it was because he showed bravery during a time of distress, and through saving the life of a small bird, he also saved her. Ever since then, she worked hard to get accepted into his high school and reunite with him.
All her hard work pays off, and though the two are able to reunite during the new school year, it looks like he doesn’t remember her. Riko doesn’t mind at all, figuring she’ll just have to work to make him remember her this time around. Just as their first encounter as high school students is going well, he asks if she has any interest in joining his club. She says yes without thinking, and is guided to his club room. The urban legend club room.
Not only is this far too scary for Riko, it’s difficult for her to believe that the calm and soft-spoken Kaito is a fan of horror stories. She already has her heart set on him though, so all she can do is put on a brave face and try to get to know him better. All while being dragged along to various haunted locations!
Review – Spoilers for Chapter One
I just love it when shoujo romance manga has horror elements! I was pleasantly surprised with how much spooky detail the author put into depicting the ghost that made an appearance in this chapter. The artstyle and overall tone completely shifted from a light and airy romance to straight horror story every time she was on the page. It left me excited for the next scary story Kaito introduces us to!
I also really enjoyed just how serious about urban legends Kaito is. His explanation that the legends aren’t just silly scary stories and that it’s important to pay respect to their origins was very touching! It shows how much care and passion he has for them, and he has earned my respect as the male lead with it! I hope Riko will be able to put her distaste for horror behind her as she gets to know him more.
As of the first chapter, I didn’t feel any romantic tension at all, but I am really enjoying their dynamic. Riko seems to be hopelessly in love with Kaito despite not knowing him all that well, and Kaito seems to only see Riko as a familiar face interested in his club. I would love to see the story unfold with Riko getting a good understanding of the real Kaito, breaking down the image of him she has built in her head.
