My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
All I want is for Nicole to get the happy ending she deserves. If she does end up with Keios, I truly hope it happens after she gets the chance to explore her other options. The notion that noblewomen are only supposed to walk the path of marriage and children is truly disheartening, so I hope and I hope some more that Nicole will potentially be able to break that social norm. Even if she does end up doing what’s expected of her, I just need it to be on her terms.
In this volume we get a good look at Keios’s backstory, and we finally see what led him down the path of dumb, neglectful fiance. He really was hopeless from the start, as it looks like genuinely everyone around him was constantly giving him the worst possible advice. While he has had nothing but the best of intentions towards Nicole, he was unable to show her his earnesty for even a moment.
While I still am not a fan of Keios, I was thankful to learn more about him. From a young age he aspired to become a knight that takes care of women. More so, upon meeting Nicole, a young noblewoman who looked completely helpless, he aspired to become a man who could take care of every little thing for her. He liked her so much and was so afraid to lose her…he took the worst possible advice. Things like “distance makes the heart grow fonder” don’t work when your fiancee sees you hanging out with the same girl all day every day, Keios!!
In the previous volume, I found myself getting a tad bored of the constant repetition. Keios would try to show Nicole his feelings, she would mistake his intentions for anything but romance, and then go off to do something by herself. While it was funny at first, she eventually started coming off as a somewhat oblivious character. Thankfully, things are shaken up quite a bit in this volume!
The path to becoming an exchange student begins, allowing Nicole to potentially take the first step towards her new life! Things don’t go all that smoothly of course, and I found myself getting stressed out for Nicole as things progressed. In her home country, noblewomen aren’t allowed to work. So, it looks like every other exchange student applicant takes problem with Nicole, a noblewoman, stepping out of place. Ohhh I just wanted to jump into the manga and give those men a slap!
I was so proud of watching just how far she has come since volume one, but it’s clear that she still has quite a journey ahead of her. Thankfully she’s not alone, so I’m sure she’ll be able to get through whatever challenge society throws at her!
