What’s the series about? (chapter one spoilers!)
Midori grew up completely surrounded by other girls. From elementary through high school, all of her schooling has been done in all-girls schools. Naturally, she grew up to be uncomfortable in the presence of men. When a few boys ask her and her friends to hang out after class one day, she retreats to a place where she knows she will be safe—their city’s game centre.
Midori just so happens to be an expert at one combat game. Her trick for being so good? She just wants to see the happy face her character makes when they win a match. That’s enough of a motivation for her to play for hours on end, learning the ins and outs of the game to allow her to defeat just about anyone.
After she finishes a round, a few boys who recognize her school uniform begin accosting her. As she is unable to deal with normal boys let alone delinquents, she freezes up. Luckily she wasn’t alone, and a boy who had been watching her play games sits down next to her, scaring the other boys away. Once she’s able to get a good look at his face she is met with shock—not only is he handsome, he also somehow resembles her favourite character!?
The two begin talking, and after Midori shares the secret behind her amazing gameplay, her saviour asks her to try falling in love with him! He then whisks her away to his school—his all-boys school—and instructs her to sit still and watch him play volleyball. Just what is happening!?
My thoughts on this chapter (spoilers for chapter one)
I found this chapter to be a little ridiculous, but a whole lot of fun! I spent a while trying to figure out Eishin’s motivations, as I didn’t really get the feeling that he fell in love with Midori at first sight. I think he thinks that she will somehow be able to push him and his team to win if she loves him, just like how her love for her favourite character allows her to win at video games. These are two completely different things, but I’m thinking that’s what his logic is: If Eishin loves it, it will win.
I wonder if this will turn into a reverse harem story or if Eishin will continue to stay in the spotlight as things moves forward. Although Midori was told to pretend to be a boy prior to entering the school, being surrounded by a bunch of muscular men all praising her causes her to faint, ultimately revealing her secret. Now that everyone seems to have a favourable opinion of her, and they all know she’s a girl, I’m thinking that they will work together as a group to help her continue the charade. If this is the case, I think the possibility of there at the very least being a love triangle is high.
