What’s the series about? (chapter one spoilers!)
Ever since she was a child, Shiori has been able to see magical creatures that most others can’t. Now a university student, she has been doing her utmost to graduate on time while also job hunting. Just as she thought she had finally found her post graduate workplace, the company that hired her went bankrupt. She doesn’t let this get her down though, as she knows all will be okay in the end.
While taking a walk outside one day, she happens upon a little talking frog. Here we learn that Shiori really enjoys talking with with these little creatures. She says that just listening to their stories tends to leave them satisfied, as most people are unable to see or hear them. Just as the two are about to say their goodbyes, she spots someone who can only be described as looking like a murderer. So, naturally, she runs away.
Not too long later she runs into the murderous-looking man again, and we learn that not only is he not a murderer, but he is her new potential employer! He works for a government agency in charge of researching and registering magical creatures. Shiori, being generally fond of the creatures and naturally curious, would make a perfect addition for the team.
My thoughts on this chapter (spoilers for chapter one)
I’m not going to lie, I did find this to be a tad confusing at first. As this was written by the author of Queen’s Quality I wanted to read as much as I could before deciding if I liked it or not, and I’m glad I did.
The series starts with a quick introduction to the notion that magical creatures coexist with humans, and that Shiori is able to see them. We then cut to Shiori telling her classmates about a scary happening in the library, “the man between the cracks”. Perhaps due to the influence Queen’s Quality has left on me, I assumed Shiori had a connection to the man. Maybe he is one of those creatures she talked about, and is having fun telling his story to her classmates, I thought. That wasn’t exactly what happened.
While Shiori does indeed enjoy her interactions with the creatures, they don’t seem to have much of an affect on her life. She seems to use the creatures to her advantage in her day to day life—like she is somehow able to tell when someone is lying to her thanks to her unique perception—but that’s about it. Her being able to see them just seems like a part of her personality, not as though it’s what her whole world revolves around.
The mysterious man then comes in and gives her an opportunity to make it her whole world. As a member of his agency, Shiori would be able to investigate and befriend all sorts of magical creatures…but the possibility that she would have to erase some is also there.
The first chapter ends with Shiori agreeing to join the company and accepting a trial run. That means hopefully we’ll be able to see her in action in volume two! I’m curious to see if this will more a more action-packed series with her fighting with the creatures, or if it will revolve around communication and understanding. While currently Shori has a very positive relationship with all the creatures that she’s interacted with to date, not all of them can be good. If they were, the agency wouldn’t exist, right?
