My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
“I told you I’d teach you what comes after holding hands, but I’m the one who’s being taught.” Oh my goodness, what a volume!
We finally get to see Ameri and Haruka move on from their vague will-they, won’t-they relationship to actual couple! While absolutely nothing in this volume surprised me, I was still happy to watch it all unfold. I feel like Haruka’s character is easy to understand from the very beginning. I had more or less assumed that he was the type to only turn serious when a girl finally sparked his interest, and I was dead on!
The first third of this volume follows Haruka as he tries to dial back their relationship. This happens much to the annoyance of Ameri, who was finally happy with the progress they had been making. Normally I would be annoyed at Haruka, as literally all of the happenings are because of him…but he only does what he does out of concern for Ameri. While he has his quirks, Haruka really is a good guy!
It’s made clear from the start that Haruka has a lot of experience with girls he doesn’t really care about, and that Ameri doesn’t have any experience with boys. It’s the reason the two develop a relationship in the first place! As Haruka has never had genuine feelings for someone before despite fooling around with a myriad of girls, Ameri is completely new territory for him. He often pulls moves he’s done with other girls, only to realize that he’s probably moving too fast with Ameri, and pulls back a little farther than he probably should. The reason he may feel wishy washy is because he’s still trying to figure out how to handle Ameri—he actually likes her and doesn’t want to scare her away.
After he gets his feelings all sorted out he finally confesses to Ameri—they’re officially a couple! At first I was worried that some of the girls who had been messing around with Haruka would come to harass Ameri, but thankfully that hasn’t come to pass. Instead, the bulk of drama this volume brings comes in the form of the second male lead—Kurokawa. While I really enjoy his character and all the jealousy he brings out of Haruka, I prefer him as Ameri’s friend.
I hear that this series will be ending soon, so I think volume four may be the final volume. While I’m very sad to see this one end—it’s one of my favourite ongoing Dessert series—I’d rather see it end on a strong note than watch it drag on for too long. Though I was hoping to be able to read on until Ameri’s web novel became a global sensation…
