My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
Cats and witches!? I felt so blessed while reading this volume. Sadly this series had been updating irregularly for quite a while, meaning there is no currently release date for volume three. It looks like its back on schedule as of now, but there are only two volumes published both in English and Japanese. It’s always the series I want to read the most that have the longest waits!
Just like in volume one, volume two mostly focuses on the mystery of who could have turned Prince Heinrich into a cat. Everyone who knows his secret is eerily calm with his feline affliction, but once you take everyone’s status into consideration, it makes sense that everyone is able to go-with-the-flow. We have the witch Miranda who turned her own cat into her familiar at a young age—there’s no way watching a cat turn into a human could surprise her. We have to cursed prince himself, a knight who claims it’s a knight’s duty to be self-sufficient—even as a cat. We also have one new mystery character, someone close enough to the prince that they’ve learned to accept whatever is thrown at them.
The number of characters who know Heinrich has been cursed to turn into a cat grows with every volume, making discovering the culprit all the more difficult. If the culprit finds out that the king knows what happened and is looking for them, surely they will do something about it. The only option is for Miranda and her companions to solve the mystery as quickly as possible. Whether they will be able to find the culprit or now seems to lie solely on Miranda’s shoulders. Although she doesn’t seem to have much confidence in her magical abilities, to me, she is the most powerful witch we’ve seen in the story yet. I wonder what happened for her to have such little self-confidence… I think Miranda learning to trust in herself will be what eventually allows the group to discover the curse-castor.
Miranda and the prince have a rather interesting dynamic that has been slowly progressing into what I can only assume will be a romantic relationship. This is the type of slow-burn that I adore, as it’s still unclear if they will actually get together or not. All we know is that they have quickly become fond of each other, but that could just be a trauma-bond from Miranda saving the cat-prince in volume one.
Even if this ends up being a romance-free fantasy series, I will be very happy I read it.
