My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
To describe this volume in one word, it’s fluffy. Now that Otogi and Toki are officially dating, we get to see a different side of Toki. While Otogi has always been true to herself and assertive with her feelings, Toki has struggled to get to where he is in this volume. It took him several volumes to even come to terms with the fact that he has genuine feelings for Otogi, and now that they’re dating, he’s working on better expressing himself to Otogi.
Because Otogi is so outspoken and confident in herself, she has no problem with asking Toki things like “exactly when did you first start liking me?” and “are you keeping every note we’ve ever exchanged in class?” Toki does his best to respond to her, but the poor boy isn’t used to clearly expressing his emotions like this. This makes for a really fun dynamic, as the usually cool Toki has a surprisingly cute side when it comes to Otogi.
Because of all the awkwardness, we get to see them exchange a diary in this volume! Otogi really is the best girlfriend. She brings up the idea that a diary would help them get to know each other better, and would also help with communicating things that may be embarrassing to say face to face. This also lead to a very cute scene with Toki getting so excited about something he wrote in the diary that he ended up blurting it out before Otogi could even read it.
My favourite part of this volume was actually not all of the development that Otogi and Toki made, but was learning more about the Otori brothers! I tend to enjoy shoujo manga that take the time to develop the side characters alongside the main characters. While we already know quite a bit about Otogi’s best friend and Toki’s “brother”, new characters are always welcome! While I won’t spoil what happens, I did get a new favourite side character (sorry Beni).
