My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)

All the places we couldn’t go to and the things we couldn’t do while we were in high school, let’s do them all.” My goodness was this ever a fantastic continuation to volume one! I love that the author is still focusing on the parallels and differences of their relationship in their teens verses in their forties. While the whole story isn’t one big comparison, it’s a lot of fun seeing how while they’ve aged around 20 years, they’re still the same people at heart.

The main point of conflict in this volume comes from their difference romantic experience levels. While Inaba has had various girlfriends over the years, Kuroki hasn’t dated anyone since the birth of her daughter. Both characters know the other’s history, and both carry themselves in different ways because of it. While they don’t actually bring it up directly, both are adult enough to treat the other with respect, and they take care to not cross the other’s boundaries—how refreshing! While it does lead to a few scenes of Kuroki being frustrated, it doesn’t last long.

While the first volume showed us the same scene from both character’s POV at different points in time, multiple times, this volume is much more straightforward. I have so much respect for the author, as they really are skilled in their storytelling! As volume one plays out the same few scenarios multiple times, the audience can fully grasp character motivations and intentions. We know what both are thinking about the other, and we understand that they are both still in love with each other. In volume two, the character motivations have already been well established, so there is no need to confirm them again. Now we can focus on the plot progression, and there’s more time to enjoy the parallels between their time in high school and now!
