My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
I was expecting this to be a pure and fluffy series that followed a bunny as it followed a fox around their forest, confessing its love. While that is certainly a good portion of what this volume entails, there are also emotionally impactful scenes scattered throughout. It goes a lot deeper than just “cute animal romance”, though I wouldn’t have been upset had it just been a surface-level story of a bunny’s crush.
This volume focuses on the barriers that come with the class that one is born in. We see many of the characters in this story preach that no matter how much you may want to be friends, predator and prey animals just aren’t compatible. While sure, when they’re young and don’t know better, fox cubs and young mice may be able to play together, but once they become aware of the realities of their worlds, interspecies socialization becomes difficult.
In comes fox. This is a fox with a somewhat cold demeanor, but endlessly kind heart. From the time it was young, it didn’t hesitate to befriend its would-be prey animals. Sadly, every animal it tried to interact with eventually grew terrified of it, ending in a harsh lesson in the truth of its world. As an adult fox it knows better than to try and befriend prey animals, but it’s not difficult to see the loneliness in its eyes.
In comes bunny. Bunny comes flying into fox’s life one day, constantly spouting I love yous. Bunny couldn’t care less about things like the natural order of the world, all it cares about is being near the ones it loves. And does bunny ever love fox. Bunny is able to see fox’s kind and gentle personally, no matter how hard it tries to hide it. Thus begins a tale of a bunny who is madly in love with a fox, and a fox who doesn’t quite understand what to do about it.
There were several scenes in this volume that surprised me with just how emotional they were. It doesn’t shy away from some very real problems that occur in the animal world, like dying from cold and hunger in the Wintertime. It also doesn’t shy away from very real problems that occur in the human world as well, like the fear and pain that comes with visiting clearly aging parents. I found the story to be just relatable enough for me to be able to connect with both bunny and fox, but whimsical enough to keep my spirits up and had me rooting for their unique relationship to last a lifetime.
