What’s the series about? (chapter one spoilers!)
Urara is a high school student who really loves cats. Whenever she needs a break from her life, she heads out to her secret cat-filled spot and indulges in the relaxation that only being surrounded by cats can bring.
One day, she spots a suspicious-looking boy watching her and the cats behind some bushes. When he realizes he’s been spotted he starts gushing about how amazing he thinks she is, and explains that though he adores cats, all the cats in their neighbourhood fear him for some reason. He then makes a sudden request of Urara: he wants to be her disciple. Surely someone who is loved by cats is able to train others to also be loved, right?
The next day at her school, Urara laments to her friend about the weird boy that requested to be her disciple. Her friend then pulls up a photo of the boy, asking if he is the one she met. When Urara confirms, her friend lets her know exactly who she is dealing with: the “crazy tiger” delinquent, Izumi. It seems like he’s an infamous troublemaker around their neighbourhood, even having sent people to the hospital..! And now that very troublemaker has become infatuated with Urara.
My thoughts on this chapter (spoilers for chapter one)
My one and only complaint with this series is that it’s too short. Like, what do you mean I’ve already read a quarter of the story after just one chapter!? I’m mourning it and I haven’t even finished reading yet…
In all seriousness, I loved this chapter. I think both Urara and Izumi are adorable, and they really bring out the best in each other. While Urara is a more quiet and reserved character, Izumi is loud and rambunctious. I’m generally a fan of the opposites attract trope, so I was content with their dynamic from the very start.
Out of the two of them, I think Izumi is more nuanced as of right now. When we first meet him he’s covered in bruises and blood, quickly revealed to be from fighting with others. In the very next scene, his reputation of “crazy tiger” is revealed to Urara, making him look like an even more overbearing delinquent. Just as Urara is starting to workshop ideas to rid herself of him, she catches Izumi chasing others away from her secret cat-filled hideaway. This allows the two of them to have an actual discussion, and Urara realizes that she shouldn’t base her opinion of him on rumours.
While Izumi may indeed get into fights, he doesn’t seem to be the one to instigate them. He also has a genuinely deep love for cats, getting filled with joy even when they cat-punch him in the face to get away from him. From what I’ve seen of him so far, I think he’s just a misunderstood boy.
It also doesn’t hurt that Urara and Izumi have good banter going on. As Urara is not used to being around boys in general—all girls high school student—she’s especially not used to dealing with handsome boys like Izumi. Izumi on the other hand, seems to be overly comfortable with everyone he comes in contact with. This dynamic allows for a lot of playful interactions, and I can’t wait to see where their relationship goes from here!
