My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)

After reading the ending of volume one (him ditching a girl in his bed to help Ameri look for her phone out in the rain), I was so excited for the continuation!

While Ameri clearly understands her feelings for Haruka by the start of this volume, it’s still unclear where Haruka’s head is. In such a dynamic it’s easy for the one more certain of their feelings to get hurt, but thankfully, Haruka is a good guy at heart. Even though he’s a bit of a playboy, he never does anything to hurt Ameri. At the very least, he sees her in a different light from the women that he’s casual with, and thus treats her a little differently. In my eyes, it’s implied that the other women he’s casually flirty with are also casually flirty with him, so there are no big expectations coming from either side.

We’re treated to one of my favourite tropes in this volume—one character nursing the other back to health after catching a cold. We get some relationship certainty in this mini arc, as Ameri falls asleep with her “plan to get Haruka all to herself” notebook open the night before Haruka comes to check on her. Ameri, being sick in bed, can’t close it in time, leading Haruka to learn about her feelings. As Haruka is again, a very good guy, the two of them start having a discussion about their feelings.

One thing I’m really enjoying about Haruka’s character is that he’s not perfect. He can be rather ambiguous with his feelings, his actions can lead some girls to think he likes them more than he does, and he tends to do whatever he wants when the mood strikes him. Despite all this, he’s very good at communicating. When he and Ameri are having their feelings talk, he is straight up with her: he genuinely has never had deep romantic feelings for anyone, so he doesn’t know how he feels about her. But…he really enjoys watching her write. While you could potentially see this as him leading her on, I see it as him being as honest with her as he can be.

Haruka is a man of many surprises! I especially enjoyed the “getting reference material for writing romance novel” scenes in this volume, as they really kept me on my toes. Just when you think something a little risque is about to occur, he changes things up with an incredibly sweet gesture. He really is the perfect partner for writing an interesting story.

The last chapter of this volume really put me through a loop. I had spent the whole volume really enjoying Haruka’s character…only for him to say that. It really did feel like he was trying to get into a romantic relationship without expressly calling himself her boyfriend, but I believe he deserves the benefit of the doubt. On top of all that weirdness with him, we’re introduced to a potential second male lead! I enjoyed him so much that I could barely spend time upset about what Haruka said, especially when he himself got upset on Ameri’s account. I think he will end up being amazing support for Ameri from here—I’m so glad she found another person as interested in web novels as she is!
