My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
This is the series I reach for when I want a distraction from life. It’s packed full of the type of drama that pulls you straight in without stressing you out.
In this volume, we see more of Kaya taunting Nasu while trying to put a wedge in between him and Ranko. Nasu, not wanting to back down, continues pursuing Ranko while Kaya isn’t looking. Oh, the drama!
While I’m still unsure of how I feel about Kaya and Ranko’s relationship, the speed at which the story moves doesn’t leave a lot of time for pondering. I do feel a little bad for Ranko though, as it really does feel like she does only see Kaya as her cute younger brother. Watching him use that to his advantage has me feeling really bad for her. Like, she already has self-esteem issues! He clearly knows this and is using that to his advantage.
I’m not saying he’s some mastermind manipulator—he’s just a jealous middle schooler. I am saying that he has no regard for social constructs. After learning about his circumstances I do also feel a lot of compassion for him, but it doesn’t excuse the way he treats Ranko! As he is very quick to get irrationally jealous at the smallest thing, I am worried about how he’ll react upon learning about the events that happened at the end of the volume…
No matter how I look at it, there’s only going to be disaster for poor Ranko.
My favourite parts of this volume (spoilers)
💛 Kaya taunting Nasu while all the boys went to the bathhouse—he’s so petty, I’m absolutely living for it.
💚 Kaya accusing Nasu of meeting up with Ranko the previous night (which he absolutely did) because he smells like her. This would have had me backing off right then and there, Kaya can be pretty scary when he wants to.
💛 Kaya just spilling all of the plotting he and Hoshii had been doing the previous few volumes. The fact they were plotting all of that was crazy enough, but then to feel comfortable exposing it all!?
💚 Ranko and Nasu almost realizing they were actually playing that online game together.
💛 Kaya inviting Ranko to go to that festival! He just wanted to cheer her up…I’m so scared to see where the story goes from here.
