My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
Comedy tends to be one of the genres that I dislike the most. When it agrees with me I tend to really enjoy it, but when it doesn’t, it can ruin an entire series for me. Because of this, I tend to avoid series that describe themselves as comedy unless I’ve already sampled a good portion of it.
His Majesty the Demon King’s Housekeeper was a blind buy I did on Free Comic Book Day, so I had no idea it was a comedy until I sat down to read it. Thankfully, I found the comedy to really enhance the story! While the entirety of it is ridiculous and silly, it so charming that it forces you to accept all of the silliness as fact.
Our female lead, the 17 year-old Sakura, has a passion for cleaning. While she sometimes may forget her wallet at home, she’s never without her special homemade cleaning supplies. This is her most prominent personality trait—she loves to clean. One day she is suddenly teleported to another world, one covered in darkness and soot. Rather than frantically search for a way back home, the most pressing issue for Sakura is how dirty everything is.
She is a surprisingly resilient character, seemingly able to persevere through anything and everything, so long as she can keep things clean. While this may make her sound like a one dimensional character, her interactions with all the otherworldly characters show her to be a bit more rounded that you would think at first glance. While she is a kind girl who cares for others, she really does just love to keep things clean.
The story revolves around her needing to help lift a curse that has banned all cleaning magic from this new world. Her bringing cleaning supplies from her own world gives her and only her the power to clean in this world, quickly granting her the title of saintess.
So, this means that the entirety of the story does revolve around cleaning. That’s really just on the surface though, as through cleaning, characters are able to make meaningful interactions with each other. Take the demon king, for example. He is a lazy demon, content to live his life doing nothing but living on his precious passive income until Sakura makes her appearance. There’s also the demon cat princess, someone we don’t know too much about yet, but is sure to become Sakura’s guide to the demon world as the story goes on.
While the story does focus on cleaning, all of that cleaning is just a medium used to show exactly how the lovely Sakura breaks her way into the hearts of those around her.
