TL;DR thoughts
I loved this volume so much! I think Hikari and Subaru are absolutely perfect for eachother—they have the sunshine x gloomy dynamic, that slowly grows as they learn more about each other. If you enjoy “opposites attract” style rom-coms, I think you’ll enjoy this one!
My thoughts on this volume (Slight Spoilers!)
I sampled the first chapter of this series a few months ago, and while I did really enjoy it, it wouldn’t be until a few months later that I was able to finally get my hands on it. Thankfully the first chapter was charming enough that I remembered everything that happened, and I was happy to re-read it when I finally sat down to read the physical.
This series follows two main characters: Subaru, and Hikari. Subaru, our female lead, is rather distrusting of others after watching her people-loving father get taken advantage of. The more I saw of Subaru, the more I grew to love her. Although she really craves absolute independence, she’s so clumsy and awkward that she just can’t do anything on her own. This doesn’t feel all that unrealistic either, as I could only imagine trying to live on my own as I started grade 10.
Hikari, our male lead, is the landlord’s son. He is the archetypal “older brother” character, even having his own much younger brother to give him some authenticity. He’s the type of character that can easily become over-protective once he gains an interest in someone, but it’s never to the point of annoyance. His bright and cheery demeanor mixed in with his clear eagerness to help others makes him a character you just can’t help but like. He’s also incredibly skilled at a wide variety of things, but all of his skills are due to his own hard work—he even pulls out a photo album to show the suffering he went through to get to this place while working with Subaru.
Together, the two of them work so well! While the story is boasted as a romantic comedy, it has no problem including some slightly deeper themes as well. I love it when such stories don’t shy away from including more mature themes, as it helps me be able to actually see the chemistry between the two leads. I typically can’t stand it when I can’t see the reasons why two characters like each other—if they’ll get into a relationship that easily, they’ll break up just as easily eventually, I tend to think to myself while reading.
So, Hikari doing things like insisting on teaching Subaru how to cook, helping her hang her laundry, and just generally earnestly helping her learn life skills, allows me to see exactly why Subaru could fall for him! Likewise, Subaru offering to help Hikari with whatever she can, doing cute things like promising to pay him back for every little thing he helps her with, and just generally giving her all with everything she does, allows me to see why Hikaru could fall for her!
The two of them are just so cute together, I can’t wait to see where their story goes in volume two.
