TL;DR rating

I loved this so much! The mood of the volume was constantly dark, but it was never hopeless. Misa is a perfect main character, walking the line of observer and only intervening when necessary.

My thoughts on this volume (Slight Spoilers!)

It’s been a while since I’ve read anything that leans heavily into the occult, so I was very excited when I discovered this series! It turns out that I’ve been completely in the dark when it comes to popular Japanese occult series, as Eko Eko Azarak has been a classic for longer than I’ve been alive—this is a reboot of the manga series. So, needless to say, I have a lot to catch up on. For me, this is a happy problem!

In this volume, we follow the mysterious and incredibly powerful witch, Misa. I was slightly unsure of her character when she was first introduced, but she quickly won me over with her fierce powers and sense of justice. As a fan of satisfying revenge stories, I absolutely got my fill with Eko Eko Azarak Reborn. Just about every chapter introduces us to an evil character that eventually gets their comeuppance. Sometimes Misa calmly and casually exacts revenge herself, and other times she’s just there to watch as karma quickly comes to bite the evil doer in the butt. Either way, it’s always satisfying.

My favourite thing about this series is how much of a “girl’s girl” Misa comes off to be. As a witch able to use dark magic, one may think of Misa as uncaring, or even evil. Though she is admittedly friends friends with some hell demons and rather passive about many things, she’s far from evil. Watching her go back to school and bond with her female classmates about her divination ability was so cute, and surprisingly didn’t feel at all out of place! Misa makes no attempts to hide the fact that she’s a witch, and is still able to capture the hearts of all the girls around her.

I mean, what’s not to like? She’s a powerful witch who protects her fellow women from the evils of men.
