TOKYOTREAT Review – What’s in the April box?

If you’re a fan of Japanese snacks, you may already be familiar with TOKYOTREAT! If not, it’s a monthly subscription box that sends a box full of Japanese snacks straight to your door. While some of the inclusion may be familiar to you (Japanese KitKats, rice crackers) others are not-so-common overseas. Because the area I live in is overwhelmingly lacking in Japanese snacks, TOKYOTREAT has been a godsend in helping me get my fix.

The April box has the theme of “Yozakura”, or “nighttime cherry blossoms”. All of the treats included were chosen as good snacks to eat while enjoying beautiful scenery.

If you want to jump right to the TOKYOTREAT site to check it out for yourself, here is a $5 off coupon to use!

My review will follow the following agenda:

What’s included in the box?

When you first open the box, you are greeted by two non-snack inclusions: a postcard, and a flier.

Inside the flier we’re given a glimpse at all of the snacks included in this month’s box along with necessary information like allergens, a brief description of the snack, and the Japanese and English names.

Not just snack information, this flier also includes various Yozakura themed articles. My favourite was the “Starlist Sakura Playlist”, as it features four artists I truly love!

In total, this box features 12 different snacks plus a pack of ramen. I found it to be fairly even on flavour profiles, with about half being sweet, and half being savory. Not just flavour profiles, but the sizing of the snacks also varies quite a bit. While some of them took me a few sittings to work my way through, others were fully devoured in the blink of an eye.

Snack information

CRUNKY Caramel White Chocolate Bar

Flavour: Sweet. This is a white chocolate caramel flavoured chocolate bar. This chocolate bar is known for its unique texture, which adds its own little twist to the flavour.

Serving size: It’s chocolate bar sized! You could eat it by yourself in a sitting, but you would feel like you just ate an entire chocolate bar (because you did)

Do I recommend?: Yes! Though I typically don’t enjoy white chocolate, I found this to be delicious! Crunky happens to be my favourite Japanese chocolate bar.

Haru no Tsumamidane – Rice Crackers

Flavour: Savoury. There are six different flavours of rice crackers in this bag: matcha, sakura, brown sugar cinnamon, shrimp, salt, peanut. I personally enjoyed sakura the most.

Serving size: I finished this bag by myself, however it is very easily shareable. The crackers are big enough that they are easy to eat, but still bite sized.

Do I recommend?: Yes, but only if you enjoy rice crackers. I enjoyed the variety of different flavours and textures all in one pack!

Kajiricchou Grape & Soda Soft Candy

Flavour: Mildly sweet. It’s grape flavoured, but it’s not strongly artificial—the flavouring is rather subtle. This is a soft candy that has a similar consistency to gum, but dissolves as you chew.

Serving size: While you could technically share this with a friend, you would have to snap it in half with your hands to do so.

Do I recommend?: Yes! I was overall pleasantly surprised by the lightness of the grape flavouring.

ST Suppa Mucho Ume – Fried Ume Potato Sticks

Flavour: Savoury and slightly sour. These are potato sticks with a plum aftertaste. They are more savoury than sour. The two different flavour profiles compliment each other very well. They are similar to Hickory Sticks in size and texture.

Serving size: You could absolutely share these with a friend—there are quite a few sticks in each package.

Do I recommend?: I highly recommend these! The flavour is unique and delicious, and they are perfectly snack-sized.

Pan Sweets – Mini Sakura Bread

Flavour: Sweet. I quite enjoyed this mini bread, but I think it would taste even better paired with tea. The bread itself is a light sakura flavour that is delicious on its own, but tastes best when eaten alongside the filling.

Serving size: Because this bread has a special filling, I would recommend this be eaten by just own person—it would be a bit tricky to cut in half fairly.

Do I recommend?: Yes! I’m a big fan of tasty breads—it’s rare for me to come across a bread I don’t enjoy.

Toryufu Cracker – Night Truffle Crackers

Flavour: Savoury. These are truffle flavoured crackers. They are hard and crunchy, but not difficult to bite into.

Serving size: Because this pack includes three crackers, You could split this evenly with three people.

Do I recommend?: This was not my particular cup of tea, but I’m still glad that I tried it! This was my first encounter with truffle, and I’m not sure if it’s a flavour I enjoy.

Umazarame – Cherry Blossom Rice Cracker

Flavour: Tangy and a tad sweet. This is a plum flavoured rice cracker with a sugar coating. This is a thicker, crunchier rice cracker. When I say it’s crunchy—it’s very crunchy.

Serving size: I would recommend this be eaten by just one person, as there is only one cracker in the bag. It’s a giant, thick rice cracker, but it would be difficult to split evenly.

Do I recommend?: Yes! Again, I love rice crackers. The sugar and plum really compliment each other, leading for a delicious cracker. This was my favourite rice cracker in the pack!

Iburigakko Potato Chips – Smoked Radish Rice Crackers

Flavour: Savory. These are a very smokey cracker—in a good way. The texture is somewhat similar to Miss Vickies chips, landing somewhere between a chip and a rice cracker. They feel more like chips to me, but that’s just my opinion.

Serving size: This is a bag of chips—perfectly shareable.

Do I recommend?: Yes! Especially if you enjoy smokey flavours.

Shiruko Sando – Shiruko Sakura Cookies

Flavour: Lightly sweet. These are listed as having both cherry blossom and plum juice flavouring, but I personally didn’t taste any. I found them to be somewhat blandly sweet, but still pleasant. They are also rather crunchy.

Serving size: Perfectly shareable. This is a bag of small cookie crackers. I would call them crackers before cookies.

Do I recommend?: While I didn’t love them, I didn’t dislike them. I would recommend them to people who enjoy lightly sweet crackers.

Matcha Latte KitKats

Flavour: Sweet. This is a matcha latte flavoured KitKat, so obviously, it tastes like matcha! Personally I find the Japanese KitKats to have a sweeter aftertaste than Canadian KitKats, but I enjoy both.

Serving size: This is a large bag full of Halloween candy-sized mini bags of KitKats. I would say this is by far the most shareable snack in the box.

Do I recommend?: Yes! I would say this is my favourite flavoured KitKat that I’ve tried so far.

**Random snack** Sobameshi Snack

Flavour: Savoury. This is sauce flavoured—something you’ll often come across in Osaka! Sauce is actually one of my favourite snack flavours, so I was incredibly happy to get my hands on this one. This is somewhat similar to Babystar Ramen snacks.

Serving size: This is easily shareable, but it’s easy to get your fingers dirty while eating this one so be careful!

Do I recommend?: Yes! But I wouldn’t eat this while walking around. This is more so a “pour into your mouth” kind of snack.

Seafood & Vegetable Soy Sauce Ramen

Flavour: Savoury. I mean, it’s ramen!

Serving size: One person. Two if you’re really good friends.

Do I recommend?: Yes! It’s hard to go wrong with ramen.

Mini Baum Cake – Sakura Roll Cake

Flavour: Lightly sweet. This is a sakura flavoured baum cake. It’s very light and fluffy in texture, perfectly complimented by a subtle sakura flavouring.

Serving size: This is easily split in half, so I would deem it shareable.

Do I recommend?: Yes! Baum cake is delicious! This was my first time trying a sakura flavoured baum cake, and I have to say I really enjoyed it.
