I Was Reincarnated as the Heroine on the Verge of a Bad Ending, and I’m Determined to Fall in Love! – Volume Two Manga Review

As I was getting ready to make this post, I took a look at the Japanese version for the first time. I always find it disappointing when English publishers decide to change the title of the series they take on, and this happens to be one such case. While it is true to the original for the most part, they opt to leave out what I believe to be a crucial part—”My cheat brother won’t leave me alone”.

If this was included in the title from the start like in the Japanese version, maybe readers like myself wouldn’t be so off-put by the sibling dynamic…

Check out my review of volume one here.

My thoughts on this volume

When I read volume one, I had two main complaints: I thought the step-sister was a cartoonish villain lacking real motivation, and I was worried about the brother-sister relationship. Thankfully, in this volume, the villainous step-sister really doesn’t make an appearance. On top of this, I think the brother-sister relationship is still within the realm of normal.

We see our heroine Reine continue to push through any obstacle that she encounters, and she even makes a few more allies while doing so. I would say the main event in this volume is the ranking test towards the end. In order for Reine to get her happy ending, she needs to rise from her current level of F, to preferably the higher level of S. This is something that I can see happening slowly throughout the volumes, but it certainly isn’t going to happen all at once. This test is conducted rather frequently, so unless something crazy happens, I predict that she’ll meet her goal before graduation!

When it comes to character growth, I don’t think we really saw any from Reine in this volume, but I’m not really complaining. We learnt more about her brother, and about two boys (one new to this volume!) that are most likely love interests. Overall, I have been enjoying watching all of the different characters interact with each other. While there really aren’t any complex characters to be found, I find them to be just charming enough to want to continue following.

I will say that I do hope we get to learn more about some of the side characters—especially her female friend. While Reine is the main character, I think it would be nice to see different character’s motivations to help her. Or even to just be shown a different side of them that we don’t see through Reine’s lense.

Things I particularly enjoyed

❤️ Arnold offering to teach Reine earth magic—I really like these two together, but I get the feeling that he’s not even a candidate for male lead…

🧡 Reine making Julius a late night snack—they work so well as caring siblings!! Please let them stay that way!! I think he’d be a wonderful protective brother, and it would explain why he’s always somehow around whenever she needs him. No creepiness!

💛 Reine slowly making her way into her classmates’ hearts, both knowingly and unknowingly. Her hard work and positive attitude is clearly still paying off!

💚 Reine and Yoshida’s relationship—he’s aloof, but very helpful! I bet he’s the kind of character who is actually very caring once his walls have been broken down enough. I wouldn’t be mad if he ended up being the male lead either…

💛 Reinhardt’s whole character is so wild to me… What do you mean he’s bullied for being talentless when he has his glasses on, and adored for his looks when he takes them off??? We hate glasses slander here!!

🧡 Reine quickly learning just how important the rank system is again—I hope she doesn’t fully forgive everyone who was awful to her when she was an F-rank. At least, not until she gets a proper apology.

I’m rooting for Yoshida right now. I just love that we don’t know his real name and when she asked if they could be friends he said you can’t become friends twice!

I love Yoshida!! I would be so happy if he ended up being the ML. He was there for her right from the start!
