What Should Your Next Read Be? (Yankii Edition)

This is a Maddie-made, just-for-fun quiz that I made! If you’re looking for a new manga recommendation, why not take my quiz? This time around, let’s look at yankii romances!

Would you be able to escape the Firefly Wedding jail cell? Take my quiz here!

How to play:

There will be four recommendations that you can get! Please keep track of which answer you agree with the most, (for example, if you get 2 A’s, and 3 B’s, then B will be the letter that you agreed with the most). The letter that you agreed with the most will lead you to your recommendation!

Let’s start!

Question 1

If the female lead of a manga were to suddenly be accosted by a group of troublemakers, you think the ML should…

A) Stick up for her instantly, and offer her comfort if she’s scared from the situation. Maybe even take her to get a fancy drink.

B) Swoop in to save her whenever possible, and work behind the scenes to make sure she’s not entangled in anything more than necessary.

C) Stick up for her, but allow her to also stick up for herself to a certain degree. A ML should allow women to have autonomy – not everyone needs saving all the time.

D) Protect her before she even becomes aware of the troublemakers. What kind of ML allows women to be accosted??

Question 2

When it comes to the amount of yankii characters that appear in a story, you prefer it when…

A) There are one or two that appear in the story, but their presence isn’t overwhelming. There are other things going on besides “typical” yankii things.

B) Just about every character that appears in the story is a yankii, with both the ML and his friends, and all antagonists being yankii. All of the ML’s friends, and the ML, become infatuated with the FL right away.

C) Just about every character that appears in the story is a yankii, with both the ML and his friends, and all antagonists being yankii. While the ML respects the FL, it takes quite a while for his friends to actually accept the FL.

D) The yankee characters do their best to hide their violent nature, in order to keep the peace at school.

Question 3

You prefer to read a story where the romance is…

A) Starting off as friendship, and then naturally turns into a romantic relationship.

B) Clearly going to happen soon after meeting the ML, but you like it when the FL stays a little bit oblivious to this. You enjoy watching the “chase”.

C) Present from volume 1, but a little bit complicated. You want there to be a tiny bit of drama (unrequited feelings, questionable relationships), but you don’t want there to be so much drama that it’s stressful – you know the main couple will be staying together.

D) A driving factor for the ML, but not the main focus of the plot. While there is romance, there are other big things going on too.

Question 4

When it comes to relationship drama, what type do you enjoy in a manga?

A) I like it when most of the drama comes from our characters challenging themselves, and trying to change for the better. I’m also okay when external characters are introduced to stir a little drama between our main couple, but only when it helps them grow. (no drama just for the sake of drama)

B) I enjoy it when our FL is thrown into our ML’s already existing drama. Especially when it helps us to quickly understand him as a character. Bonus points if it helps push our couple together more quickly.

C) I like it when most of the drama comes from our characters lifestyle differences… But I also don’t mind when other character’s emotions cause a bit of drama for our main couple. (emphasis on a bit)

D) I prefer it when the drama is a part of the story, rather than found in the relationship. I like stories where the main couple stays strong throughout external drama.

Question 5

Which of the following series do you enjoy the most?

A) Honey so Sweet

B) Ouran High School Host Club

C) Henyoku no Drops

D) Youchien Wars

The Results..!

If you picked mostly A‘s… You got Megane, Tokidoki Yankii-kun

If you want something with a (former?) yankii ML, but also something cute and lighthearted, this is my recommendation for you! Megane is a very cute slice of life series, where you will find yourself rooting for our main couple right from the first page.

If you picked mostly B‘s… You got Gunrou ni Hana

If you enjoy a yankii series with a strong female lead, and a bunch of boys who are obsessed with her, this is my recommendation for you! This is a fairly new series, and I don’t think it’s received the love that it deserves. This series has its full of ambitious characters, drama, and action.

If you picked mostly C‘s… You got Hikaeme ni Ittemo, Kore wa Ai

Love that's an understatement - Zen

If you’re looking for something to read that has a strong female lead, but also want her to be able to depend on the ML, this is my recommendation for you! Our FL in this series has historically done everything on her own, and slowly learns that it’s important to be able to depend on others. This one does have bits of drama here and there, but it’s never anything serious.

If you picked mostly D‘s… You got Akabane Honeko no Bodyguard

If you’re looking for a non-shoujo!! yankii romance series, this is my recommendation for you! While it’s not shoujo, and so, has some ~different~ tropes, I do recommend it! Though the romance isn’t at the forefront of the story, it’s certainly a driving force for our male lead. This is the most action-packed series on this list, by far!
