What happens in Volume Two?
The start of volume two is quite a bit different from volume one, with Mio being bombarded with invitations for the following Saturday. Her two new girl friends invite her over to have a study session, and because they were the first to ask that’s where Mio eventually ends up. She’s also invited to go eat strawberry crepes by two members of the student council, and to go for ramen by another, but she unfortunately has to turn them all down.
As it’s her first time going to a friends house she’s a little bit nervous, and spends time researching what a person should bring to a friends house to be polite. The number 1 answer online was wagashi (a sweet Japanese traditional candy), so she heads off early Saturday morning to pick some up. The shop ends up belonging to the parents of one of the members of the student council: Tachibana.
Tachibana is the one member Mio hasn’t really spoken to yet, being under the impression that he’s not a big fan of women. Meeting like this ended up having a wonderful effect on their relationship, as Mio offers to help Tachibana with some calligraphy work before she heads off to her study group, and the two of them are able to talk.
Tachibana reveals that due to his athleticism and height, upon entering high school he was incredibly popular with his female classmates,, but this was very short-lived. Once they realized that he has a rather dry personality, they began avoiding him, and this hurt his self confidence. Mio, being rather socially awkward herself, completely understands his plight. The two of them begin sharing stories, and end things on a very happy note.
Back at school, the sports festival is soon approaching, and the student council is as busy as ever. Unbeknownst to the rest of the council, the president has taken it upon himself to add quite a few extra events to this year’s festival. Mio had previously talked about how her lack of athletic abilities, along with her social awkwardness, made it all but impossible to participate in prior years. So, the president decided to add a few events that all students could participate in, regardless of ability.
All of this work unfortunately takes a toll on him, and he passes out in front of Mio one day. This leads to Mio insisting that he start depending on her more, lest he work himself into a coma.
Come the day of the festival, we learn that the grand prize for a certain race is tickets to a zoo, and the vice president promises Mio that he will win the race and take her out. And while he does win, the other members of the council have absolutely no intention of letting the two of them go by themselves. The president is quick to buy tickets for the remaining members, and they set out to go to the zoo… in the next volume.
What I like about this volume
❤️ I like how every member of the student council is being given their own chance to shine! The first volume really only highlighted two of the four boys, but we got to see more of all of them in this volume.
🧡 Everyone thinking of Mio – I really like how kind everyone is to Mio,, she’s such a sweet character and really deserves it. I’m thankful that there’s no unnecessary bully plot surrounding her. Her being awkward and having difficulty making friends is plenty.
💛 The president and vice president – While I feel like the president is going to be the male lead, I’m curious to see if the vice president will actually be given a shot.
💚 Mio standing up for Airu – I was a tiny bit surprised to see Mio going out of her way to call out those rude boys after the incident ended, but it was a happy surprise! It gives a glimpse into why everyone loves her so much.
