First Impressions and thoughts

I wasn’t quite sure what to think about this series at first! I had been seeing edits of it on TikTok here and there, and I eventually decided to give it a try. Because I already knew that I was a fan of the art, I decided to buy this without sampling the first chapter like I normally do. I have 0 regrets, as this was such a good story.

I love a story with a strong female lead, and from the second Satoko enters the story, she proves that she is just that. No matter what crazy situation she finds herself in she manages to find a way out – though it may not always be the best way out.

I also really love Shinpei’s character, as he’s just so unhinged it’s funny. I never know what he’s going to do next, and I was absolutely unable to gauge his intentions come the end of the volume.

What’s it about? *SPOILERS*

Satoko, the eldest daughter of the Kirigaya household, was unfortunately born with a serious heart condition. The doctors assume she won’t have much longer to live, and she often has fits that leave her bedridden for days.

Her goal in life is to pay back her father for all of the kindness he showed her when raising her, specifically by getting married to a man of his choosing. Her heart condition makes this rather difficult though, as most reputable men are uninterested in marrying someone sure to die young.

Satoko was raised to be the most desirable bride possible to combat this, being forced to study things like the arts and history diligently while her step-sister chose to laze about and play with her friends. This, among various other factors, lead the two sisters two have a terrible relationship.

Satoko is able to persuade her father into letting her visit the city for a shopping trip, provided that she brings a bodyguard with her. She complies, and heads out to secretly purchase a birthday gift for her father.

When the two get to the shop, they seperate, with the promise that the bodyguard will be right back. Just about the second he leaves though, Satoko is kidnapped by several large men. We’re not sure of the reasoning behind the kidnapping, nor who orchestrated it.

She is knocked out, and when she wakes up, she finds herself bound in some type of storage container-looking cell.

Here we learn a little bit more information: whoever paid this organization to kidnap her, also requested her death. They seem to be against having her be turned into a forced prostitute, and they have a lot of money to offer.

We also learn that this group is not the one that will kill her for some reason, and they lend the task of finishing her off to a mysterious man named Shinpei. When Shinpei walks in, the head of the organization warns all of the men that as they don’t have the money to pay to sleep with her, they are forbidden from touching her. He then tells Shinpei to kill her at a specific time, and to stop any of the men should they try touching her.

Shinpei does follow his orders, as when a few of the men come in with intentions to sleep with her before she’s ultimately killed, he, without hesitation, slices off quite a few limbs.

As she’s doing her best to convince Shinpei to spare her life, he doesn’t really seem to be interested in anything she offers up. Until.. she tells him that she’s fallen in love with him and wants to marry him.

He eats this up almost immediately, scoops her up, and escapes the small cell that was holding her. There is a quite brutal fight scene as the men pursue them, and Shinpei demands Satoko give him a kiss to prove that she is indeed in love with him. If she declines, then he’ll just go on to kill her at the agreed upon time.

She then does give him a kiss, and they agree to get married.

To be able to get married though, Satoko first needs to be able to figure out exactly where she is… And though Shinpei agreed to help her, he clearly can’t be fully trusted..

My Favourites

  • Shinpei – he’s scary and cute at the exact same time.
  • Satoko – she’s probably the most capable female lead i’ve seen in quite a while.
  • The pacing – the plot moved at an incredible pace, I was fully invested the whole time.

My Least-Favourites

  • Nothing!!

The Main Characters

Kirigaya Satoko

  • The eldest daughter of a count.
  • Born with a serious heart condition.
  • Is famous for her beauty.
  • Surprisingly resourceful.

Gotou Shinpei

  • A contract killer.
  • Loved by the prostitutes on the island.
  • A man of many mysteries.
  • Very childish, but also very scary.
