The Ice Guy and the Cool Girl / 氷属性男子とクールな同僚女子 : Volume 2 Manga Review and Thoughts

The Ice Guy and the Cool Girl is a slice of life, fantasy romance manga! The fantasy in this series takes a serious backseat to the romance, with the fantastical elements of the story being accepted as just part of the world. And honestly, this makes the manga all the more entertaining to read.

Impressions and thoughts

I actually enjoyed volume two more than volume one! I really liked that there was more focus on our main couples coworkers, as all of the characters that appear in this series are very likable. While our main couple, Himuro and Fuyutsuki, are still very much at the forefront of the story, it’s very refreshing to be given occasional glimpses into the new soon-to-be couple’s relationship!

What happens in volume 2?

This manga is formatted slightly different from typical romance manga: it is episodic, and reads more like a web novel! While it does flow well, and each story does fit together in chronological order, it is a little bit choppy! I’ve quickly grown to enjoy this type of story-telling, as it’s rather unique when compared to the other types of manga i’ve been reading lately.

In volume two, we see a lot more of Himuro and Fuyutsuki’s coworkers. Komori, the descendent of a fox spirit, is another mystical being working at the office. She and Himuro are by no means the only two special beings in the workplace, and we quickly learn that being the descendent of a mythical creature is seen as something normal in this world.

Being the descendent of a fox spirit, when she’s not paying extra careful attention, Komori has ears and a fluffy tail that pop out. She absolutely loves foxes, and throughout this volume she is working to find a small fox collectable that can be found in a candy box – this is a new development that she is very excited to learn about.

We also relearn some information about Himuro in this volume: that he turns back into a child when it gets too hot out. When fuyutsuki sees him struggling, she offers him a popsicle so that he can regain his adult composure… but not before sneakily taking a picture of him in his melted-child state and making it her phones home screen.

The two couples end up going to a theme park together after being prompted to go by their boss, and they rather quickly get seperated. Leading both couples to have their own “dates”!

This isn’t the only date in this volume though, as Fuyutsuki and Himuro also make abrupt plans to see a movie together a little earlier in the volume.

My Favourites

  • The story-telling – I really enjoyed how this story was told in bite-sized pieces.
  • The different couples – I enjoyed the further introduction to the coworkers characters!
  • The slow-burn – I feel like the pace this story is moving at is ju~st right.

My Least-Favourites

  • Nothing yet!
