Mini Manga Review – Higashisengoku-san no Makeup Doll

A small recap

Would you want a handsome beauty student in charge of doing your hair and makeup every day? That is what this manga is all about!

After bumping into our beauty student male lead Higashisengoku, Akira blurts out all of her pent up struggles at him: she is a not cute girl, and no matter what she does, she can never become cute. All of this, she tells him during their very first meeting.

Higashisengoku, dislikes hearing Akira talk about herself as though she is hopeless. When she tells him that she feels as though she just can’t make herself beautiful, he takes her to his schools beautician parlor, and gives her a complete makeover. Through this makeover Akira learns something very important: she isn’t hopeless, or clueless, she’s just never learnt how to put makeup on, or how to style an outfit.

Higashisengoku sees a blank canvas in Akira, and they strike a deal to allow him to practice his makeup skills on her every single day. Higashisengoku gets to practice his practical application skills, and Akira gets to be made up every day! Through their time together, Akira slowly but surely begins to gain confidence in herself that she has long lost.

This manga has an overall theme of the importance of self-acceptance!

Front and back covers

While I currently only have the first two volumes, I really love the sunset vibe that they both give! I also think the cover design matches the vibes of “male beautician”.
