Did you know Amazon Japan has a whole “read for free” section!? There are so many cute short stories hidden away here, it’s really worth taking a look! Today, I want to introduce one of such manga: ヤンキーくん(?)を名前で呼んじゃったら, or, when you call a yankee(?) by their name.
What is a yankee?
In order for me to explain this story, you first need to understand what a “yankee” is! You may be thinking “Maddie, of course I know what a yankee is, that’s an English word!” however, you would be wrong! In Japanese, a “yankee” refers to a young delinquent. Usually depicted having dyed hair, piercings, and riding motorcycles. As delinquents, these young people would usually be in some sort of gang/group, and would be a little bit feared by their classmates.
Now that we’ve gotten our definition cleared away, let’s talk about this manga!

The story
To describe it very quickly, this is a story of a yankee-looking boy who gets flustered whenever someone calls his name. It’s a very cute, very short story!
Although there is no furigana (phonetic indication for reading chinese Kanji characters), as it is short, I do think it is still somewhat beginner friendly!
In the left image, our FMC is saying “thanks, Tarou-kun~”.
In the right image, our MMC is saying “What!! What’s with your way of saying my name?!”
Literally they’re so cute!! This is the first time we’re shown this gap that he has (that is, he looks really rough, but his personality is actually really cute), and it changes everyone’s opinions of him almost instantly.
Our two main characters end up eating together along a bridge, and we learn more and more about Tarou (all of which make him cuter)
In the top panel, Tarou is explaining that he got his cuts from taking care of his cat.
In the middle, our FMC thanks Tarou for the sprouting bud (meaning, she’s thanking him for sharing this side of him, because she’s starting to get interested in him).
In the bottom, Tarou is saying he doesn’t get it.
