Watashi no Machi no Chiba-kun : What I read today

I bought this digitally from Amazon a few years ago, but the age gap really rubbed me the wrong way, and so I dropped it. I gave it a second try today, and I actually enjoyed it much more this time around! While there is an inappropriate age gap romance, it isn’t meant to be the featured romance in the series (at least I hope).

This is a guilty pleasure manga for me, so no judgements thank you

Info about the manga

If you’re more of a tv person than a manga person…

There is a live action TV show! It just starting airing this year (2024), so I am not sure how many episodes there are yet. You can read more about it here on My Drama List.

How many volumes, and other manga

This series has officially ended at 9 volumes! If you want to try reading it, you can download a free sample from Amazon here.

This manga-ka also wrote Ijiwaru Oniichan, so I really think they have a type of story they enjoy writing.

Why I like this manga

Okay, so, I know this manga can be really controversial. However, I do like the trope of first loves finding each other after x amount of years, and this manga gives exactly that trope! I will say that I do not like high school x teacher romances and never will.

The story…

The characters

There are three characters this manga mainly revolves around: our female lead, Machi, and our two male leads: Yuto Chiba, and Yuichi Chiba.

Machi

Machi is a 27 year old teacher, who really wants to have a good relationship with a decent man. I find her to be very relatable in many aspects of her life, but she can get rather messy rather fast.

Yuto Chiba

Yuto is Machi’s newest student, a high school students. He specifically entered her class because she is his first love when he was in grade school. He is also the younger brother of Machi’s first love, and they look almost identical (only 10 years apart).

Yuichi Chiba

Yuichi is Machi’s first love, but has never really had a relationship with her. He got married and moved away a few years before the manga started, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be out of her life forever…

Is it really that messy?

I’m honestly here for the messiness of this manga. Machi, a high school teacher, is going about her daily routine when suddenly a familiar face walks into her classroom. It’s the face of her first love… or is it? Turns out, it’s the face of her first love’s younger brother, Yuto. When Machi looks at him, she sees only her first love, and you can imagine how difficult that makes her job.

On top of that, the younger brother actually has feelings for her, claiming she is his first love. He does everything he can to get her flustered — and it’s not that hard for him to do.

Despite knowing that it’s wrong, and that he’s her student, Machi can’t help but feel drawn to him. She tries to resist, but whenever she looks at him, all she sees is her first love. One night, after hooking up with someone she met at a mixer, she finds herself imagining that he was her first love… or was it her new student? They look so similar, it’s hard for her to tell.

Things get even more complicated when, at another mixer, Machi unexpectedly bumps into her new student. But wait — it’s not him. It’s her first love, who’s come back! They get along really well, and even agree to go out again. So, were her confused feelings towards the new student/his younger brother really just misplaced feelings for her first love?

Is there drama? (we’re generally not a fan of drama)

This manga is literally nothing but drama, and red flags, and squashed social norms. But! I felt no stress while reading it. It’s so out of pocket that I couldn’t find myself concerned for anyone.
