Brutal : The Confessions of a Serial Killer Policeman (1) – My Thoughts

Although this Manga has been on hiatus since 2022 due to the authors health, there have been 5 volumes published so far, so there is still much to be read!

Plot Summary

The summary is pretty basic: a policeman who kills serial killers. A good majority of the manga focuses more on the soon-to-be victims rather than our policeman MC himself—and, for me at least, that makes you even more excited for him to enter the story and deliver his justice.

There are a total of four chapters in volume one. The first chapter works as an introduction to the premise and tone of the manga as a whole, while the last three chapters follow an interlocking storyline.

Killer Policeman

When the policeman does enter a storyline, it’s pretty evident that he’ll take action within the next few pages. While there isn’t much gore to be found, there are strong implications of what’s happening, so I wouldn’t recommend this manga to anyone who can’t handle a violent storyline.

Rather than the murders that end storylines, the majority of the violence in this manga revolves around the soon-to-be victims. There was one scene in particular that is still a bit difficult for me to read through, but that only made watching the retribution at the end all the more satisfying.

My Favourite Things About This Manga

  • The revenge plot lines always go extra hard
  • It doesn’t shy away from darker storylines
  • The policeman is always really campy, its incredibly fun to read

My Least-Favourite Things About This Manga

  • Nothing (yet)

My Ratings

Art

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The art matches the mood of the manga perfectly, imo. There’s nothing unnecessarily added in, like what’s often found in horror manga nowadays.

Plot

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I’m a sucker for a good revenge story, and this manga is nothing but that. I also have always found myself drawn to police TV drama’s, so that may be why I’m extra partial to this Manga.

Scariness

Rating: 3 out of 5.

It’s not scary in the sense that you would likely have difficulties falling asleep after reading it, but it is scary in the sense that I can imagine some of the crimes done by the victims actually being committed in real life.

Final Thoughts

Brutal is probably my favourite straight up horror manga that I own. I really hope that the author makes a speedy recovery, and is able to create again soon.
