My First Impressions of My Black Mage is Too Cute: Volume 1 Review

When I saw that Surugaya was having a free shipping sale, before I knew it I had spent hours browsing through their online stock… As they primarily sell used books, there was a good amount of manga that only had random volumes, so finding something to buy was a bit challenging at first.

I thought this manga’s title was interesting, and the cover art also caught my eye—and they had the first two volumes in stock! It was a blind buy, and I definitely don’t regret it.

Story Summary

Set in a magic academy, a tsundere black magician boy is hiding his romantic feelings for his cheerful classmate behind a rude façade. But, he doesn’t know that she can read minds.

My First Impressions

As this was a total blind buy, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect when I started reading it, but the two main characters certainly caught me off guard. Jade, the male lead black magician, was described as a “tsundere” character, but I wasn’t ready for just how tsundere he was going to be. Literally every other word out of his mouth is “die,” and he only speaks in insults. The female lead, Aria, has an overly sunny disposition and is in perfect contrast with Jade’s dark and angry energy. I really didn’t like her all that much when I first started reading, and she still wasn’t my favourite by the end of the volume.

The Characters

Aria

As a third year, she is tasked with teaching and guiding a small group of first years. Despite this, she is incredibly bad at being in charge. She is well-liked because of her cheerfulness, but I can’t imagine why she was put in charge of literally anyone.. It feels like she was written to be clumsy purely to give the ML chances to save her.

Through her bloodline, she has the magical ability to read both humans and animals emotions/thoughts via touch. This leads to a lot of awkwardness with the male lead, as his thoughts and actions are in complete contrast with each other.

Jade

Jade is a black magician, who is feared and hated by almost everyone at school for his bloodline. Because of this, he puts up an act to keep others from getting involved with him. He is an incredibly gifted mage, and is the only one in this volume to be shown as competent.

A Surprise Gift

This manga came with another short story inside! Titled “The lazy saint and the healthcare devil”, it was a 22 page one-shot. I actually enjoyed this more than the mangas main story…

Final Thoughts

While I didn’t love this manga, I didn’t hate it! I’m going to read the second volume before I make any decisions, but it’s definitely not in my top 10.
