What happens in chapter one?
A vampire approaches a house one day, looking for a person named Himari. While three women live in this house: a grandmother and her two grandchildren, only one of the grandchildren is home. This grandchild takes the vampire for a suspicious person, and sends him on his way.
It turns out the vampire is searching for a person he was in love with a long time ago, Himari. When they did know each other long ago, Himari requested he meet her by the ocean just a little bit before sunrise. It seems like she didn’t know he was a vampire, and he didn’t know she wanted to watch the sunrise—something deadly to vampires. While he was waiting for her out in the open, the sun rose on him. Unable to find shelter in time, he turned to ash before she could arrive at their arranged spot.
While he was still alive as ash, he certainly was no longer able to communicate with anything. For many, many years, he lived on as ash, deeply regretting not being able to meet with Himari that day. Through sheer willpower, he was eventually able to gather himself back together into his vampire form. Even though he regained a proper form, he has no idea how to go about finding Himari.
He eventually stumbles upon one of the granddaughters, and when he explains his situation to her, she thinks he surely must be talking about her older sister. So, she gives him a pep talk and brings him to their house. Outside, the vampire Zaha runs into the grandmother, and instantly recognises her as Himari. It seems like she remembers him too, and invites him inside.
My thoughts on this chapter
I was literally on the verge of tears the entire time I was reading this chapter. He willed himself back together just to apologize for not being able to meet her!! And it’s not like he ditched her or anything—the sun literally turned him into dust before they could meet.
I’m a little bit scared to continue reading this series, as I have a feeling it’s not going to have a happy end. As Zaha is immortal, and Himari is already a grandma, even if she accepts his feelings, realistically they won’t have much time at all together… Just thinking about it makes me want to cry. I just want them to be happy together!
I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a tragic romance. Just in the first chapter alone, Zaha has fully captured my support. While he’s a little bit silly, he’s also incredibly romantic. He’s the kind of character you really want to see get his happy ending.
This is a series I’m going to try getting the physical for—I really want to add it to my collection.
