What happens in chapter one?
Manoa is the kind daughter of an aristocratic family. Though she has a fiancé, he’s more interested in his secret affair partner than her, often leaving her alone. She’s typically okay with this, as her childhood friend Gilbert is often nearby, just waiting to spend time with her.
At a large gathering of nobles one day, while Manoa’s fiancé was off chatting with his affair partner and her childhood friend was being held up by his family, a tragedy occurred. Both Manoa’s and the affair partner’s drinks were poisoned, causing both girls to collapse. Because her fiancé chose to prioritize his affair partner over her, Manoa almost fully succumbed to the poison.
She wakes up out of her body after the event, and is greeted by a Grim Reaper. He tells Manoa that she only has three days of life force left in her. She at first tells him to just take her away now, but after learning that her childhood friend has romantic feelings for her, she regains her resolve, and sets out to save her own life.
The Reaper grants ghost Manoa the power to enter people’s bodies, and tells her that there is likely a force causing her to be this sick. While she was indeed poisoned, the other girl was able to make a speedy recovery. There’s more than likely someone intentionally killing Manoa off, he tells her.
The two of them set their sights on both the fiancé, and the affair partner, and begin to investigate. While Manoa’s intentions are purely to save herself, the Grim Reaper finds this case to be all too fascinating. Without him, Manoa wouldn’t bring herself to doubt anyone in her life, and she would surely die in three days. Without her, the Reaper would lose his source of entertainment for the next three days.
My thoughts on this chapter
This is one of the most unique series that I’ve read in a while, and absolutely the most unique aristocratic series that I’ve read! The Grim Reaper character is so much fun, and I really enjoyed watching his dynamic with Manoa. He’s very good at reading people, so he always figures out when the best time to follow someone out of a room is.
As Manoa clearly doesn’t have an evil bone in her body, she takes people at their word. So, when she (in ghost form) watches her no ex-fiancé request their engagement to be dissolved, she is shocked. When she hears him promise he will repent for not being able to save her for the rest of his life, she believes him! She actually thinks that he truly regrets not being able to save her, and that he’s breaking off the engagement as a way to punish himself! He was openly cheating on her!!
She really needs a character like the Grim Reaper to help ground her. After this scene, though Manoa really wants to believe in her ex-fiancé, the Reaper insists they follow him back to his house. It’s here we see who he really is—a spoiled brat who doesn’t care if she lives or dies. I think she really needed to see this, and that maybe seeing more of the world in ghost form will help her to be less naive.
