My Top 3 Shoujo Manga Protagonists

As I read so much manga on a daily basis, I’ve come to really enjoy some characters more than others. While I tend to equate my favourite characters with my favourite series, sometimes I also can find a character that I really enjoy in a series that I don’t really feel all that drawn to.

In this post, I want to share my top three favourite shoujo manga characters (girls only!).

My favourites

Colette from Colette Decides to Die

This should come as a surprise to absolutely no one. Colette Decides to Die is one of my favourite series partially because of how much I love Colette! She’s driven by her desire to help those around her, and always takes time to appreciate the little things in life. While she does place importance on her relationship with Hades, it’s not the only meaningful relationship in her life. She spends time actively getting to know all of the skeletons that work in the underworld, and even eventually wins their favour! Which feels like an incredibly big deal.

I love how independent she is, but that she knows she has a support system that she can go to for advice and comfort should she need it.

Nagi from The Failure at God School

Nagi is so optimistic that it’s hard to dislike her! Even when things seem dire, she does her best to stay positive and push through. We see this more and more in the later volumes – where others would quit, she just takes a moment to find a new route that she could take.

She makes friends at her new school almost instantly thanks to her positivity, and it’s these friendships she forged that allow her to keep going. Even when she encounters people who don’t seem to particularly like her, she understands that they may be dealing with other issues. For example, she can rationalize that someone might have had a bad day, and that’s why they’re being a little mean to her. Of course, she never holds this against them.

Lisa from Love, That’s an Understatement

Love that's an understatement - Zen

Lisa is a character who goes through quite a bit of growth across all seven volumes currently out. She’s a very strong independent character, and she’s slowly learning how to depend on those around her. While I would love her all the same if she were to stay independent, it’s nice to watch her be able to relax a little bit as the series progresses.

I really love that she doesn’t let many things bother her – when Zen had to step away from a date with her, she just went to do the things she wanted on her own. I really respected that! She does what she wants to do and stays true to herself.

Even if she says she doesn’t really care about those around her, she still tries to tutor Zen and his friends right from the start. When Zen’s friends weren’t all that nice to her, she still didn’t let it stop her.

I think my favourite thing about her is that while she is in a relationship with Zen, she doesn’t let it define her. She still has her own little world with her own things going on.
