This is a incredibly cute retelling of Alice in Wonderland. The tribulations our new Alice goes through are a little bit different from the original story, but they aren’t any less charming. If you want to see a Japanese spin on the story, I highly recommend this series.

A quick recap of volume 1
After being orphaned at a very young age, our Alice had to move in with her aunt and uncle. Not only does she have to deal with the stress of losing both parents and leaving her hometown of Kyoto, her uncle is incredibly abusive to her.
After he makes a comment of how they would be better off without her, Alice resolves to leave her house. She thinks that if she moves back to Kyoto, she can work first as a Maiko, eventually graduating into a Geisha. So, she makes a call, and a company agrees to hire her, going as far as sending a car to pick her up.
Once she arrives in Kyoto, she quickly realizes that it’s not the Kyoto that she once knew. There are a few talking animals, and the layout of the city is completely different from how she remembers. If that wasn’t confusing enough, the establishment that agreed to take her in insists that they never even spoke to her, let alone agree to take her in.
Alice does eventually get to live at the Geisha establishment, and it’s there that she learns that while she’s in Kyoto, it’s not her Kyoto. She’s found herself in something of an alternate reality where while some things are exactly the same, others couldn’t be more different. Though Alice wants to stay in this new Kyoto, she soon learns that the only way to be accepted by this world is to be true to herself.
What I liked about this volume
💛 Alice being a book lover – I loved watching her read her stories to the kids in Kyoto.
❤️ The plotline of Alice needing to figure out who she is, and what she wants to do, was very fun to read! I enjoyed the fact that she needs to be happy to be able to stay in Kyoto.
🧡 The geisha helping Alice as much as they could, but still allowing Alice to grow on her own.
💚 Ren – mysterious boy who turned out to be royalty!? I can’t wait to see him more in the next volume.
