Let’s take a look at how to use this word in a sentence!
Example Sentences
First, let’s look at what the boy in our example picture is saying! First, let’s make a word bank!
| English | Hiragana | Kanji | Romaji (reading) |
| Excuse me | しつれい します | 失礼します | Shitsurei shimasu |
| Serinuma | せりぬま | 芹沼 | Serinuma |
| Upperclass men | せんぱい | 先輩 | Senpai |
Now, let’s write out what he said in romaji!:
“Shitsurei shimasu. Serinuma-senpai.”
Let’s change it to hiragana:
“しつれい します。せりぬま せんぱい.”
And lastly, let’s add in the kanji:
”失礼 します。芹沼 先輩.”
We can translate this sentence using our word bank at the top:
“Excuse me, Serinuma-senpai.”
What if we want to say… “Excuse me, is Mr. Takahashi here?” As in… A student walked into the staff room, and asked for Mr. Takahashi! First up, we need a word bank!
| English | Hiragana | Kanji | Romaji (reading) |
| Excuse me / I’m entering | しつれい します | 失礼します | Shitsurei shimasu |
| Mr. Takahashi | たかはし せんせい | たかはし先生 | Takahashi-sensei |
| Here (lit. exists) | います | います | Imasu |
Now that we know all of the relevant words, let’s put them together in a sentence!
First, in romaji only:
“Shitsurei shimasu. Takahashi-sensei wa imasu ka?”
Now using hiragana:
”しつれい します。たかはし せんせい は います か?”
Now let’s add in the kanji:
”失礼 します。たかはし 先生 は います か?”
Let’s try one more sentence! What if we want to say… “Excuse me, but did you call for me“? As in, you entered the room, and then asked a teacher if they were looking for you!
Let’s get the word bank started!
| English | Hiragana | Kanji | Romaji (reading) |
| Excuse me | しつれい します | 失礼します | Shitsurei shimasu |
| Teacher | せんせい | 先生 | Sensei |
| Me / I | わたし | 私 | Watashi |
| To call for | よびます | 呼びます | Yobimasu |
Alright, let’s make some sentences!
First, using romaji only:
“Shitsurei shimasu. Sensei ga watashi o yobimashita ka?”
Now using hiragana:
“しつれい します。せんせい が わたし を よびました か?”
Now let’s add in the kanji:
”失礼 します。先生 が 私 を 呼びました か?”
