Learn Japanese through Shoujo Manga:  お待たせ / おまたせ / Omatase

Let’s take a look at how to use this word in a sentence!

In the above image, the boy is only saying one word: おまたせ / omatase. This is a very good example, as this is often used all on its own like this! This way of using the word is incredibly casual – you should only use it with your friends and peers.

Example Sentence

Let’s try to make a sentence! How about: Sorry for making you wait! Shall we get going (soon)? First, let’s look at the words that we need to know to make the sentence:

EnglishHiraganaKanjiRomaji (reading)
To make waitおまたせお待たせOmatase
SoonそろそろそろそろSorosoro
To goいく行くIku

Now, let’s write it out in romaji!:

“Omatase! Sorosoro Iku ka?”

Let’s change it to hiragana:

”おまたせ!そろそろ いく か?”

And lastly, let’s add in the kanji:

”お待たせ!そろそろ 行く か?”

We can translate this sentence using our word bank at the top:

I made you wait! Shall we get going?

What if we want to say it a tiny bit more formally?

One degree more formal would be:

  • Omatase shimashita / おまたせ しました / お待たせ しました

To make it a little bit more formal, we can add “sorry” at the beginning!:

  • Sumimasen, Omatase shimashita / すみません、おまたせ しました / すみません、お待たせ しました

And that’s Omatase! Have you ever heard this word before?
