What happens in volume 1?
Volume 1 throws us right into the world of the manga, where we meet our main character Yuki! She is a deaf college student, and while she is unable to hear anything, she typically doesn’t have any difficulty communicating with those around her. Her way of thinking is rather poetic, and there are many references and connections made to her deafness and how she interacts with the world.
A mysterious man on the train
We first meet Yuki while she’s on the train. Caught up in her thoughts, she doesn’t notice the foreign man trying to get her attention so that he can ask for directions. She is saved from the awkward situation when a tall white-haired man steps in, and helps the man situate himself.
Yuki thanks the man for helping her, and quickly explains that she is deaf, and cannot communicate in the traditional sense. The man, quickly becoming rather familiar with Yuki, asks her if she can’t read his lips, gives her a pat on the head, and heads off the train.

Girl consultation
After being saved by this mysterious man, Yuki makes her way to school to meet up with her best friend, Rin.
After describing the man to Rin, she instantly understands him to be Itsuomi, a man in club. That means that he goes to the same college as Yuki! While Rin isn’t all that familiar with Itsuomi, she does know that he enjoys traveling.
As Rin knows where Itsuomi works, and just so happens to have feelings for the manager, the two girls decide to head over to their place of work so that they can ask to exchange contact information.
To the Cafe Bar!
The girls make their way to the cafe, and are greeted kindly by both men. Yuki gets to chat quite a bit more with Itsuomi, where she learns that he really enjoys learning about different cultures.
Itsuomi even speaks multiple languages: English, German, Mandarin, and is in the middle of learning Spanish. We later learn that this is partially thanks to the fact that he used to live abroad with his parents.

Heading home
The girls stay at the cafe until Itsuomi’s shift ended, and he offers to walk her back. To give the two some space, (and since she already completed the goal of getting the managers contact info) Rin heads home alone in a different direction.
Yuki does manage to ask Itsuomi for his contact information, and in return he asks her “How do you say sure in sign language?”. From there they exchange their info, and begin texting! One of the first messages Itsuomi sends Yuki is to “Let me into your world”. Yuki gets a little bit flustered after reading this message, but they end up having a rather cute moment thanks to it.

Back at school, with a jealous “friend”
Things between Itsuomi and Yuki are going rather smoothly, and they are able to chat comfortably now! After running into each other and chatting for a bit at their school though, Yuki looks up to see an old face staring at his disapprovingly.
This old face belongs to her childhood friend, Oushi. He saw her and Itsuomi chatting, and decided right then and there that he dislikes Itsuomi. He asks Yuki to define her relationship with him, and she refers to him as just a friend. Oushi though, states that he doesn’t acknowledge him as her friend.

Itsuomi goes on a trip!
Itsuomi goes on a trip, (something that he does very often) and offers to bring Yuki back a souvenir. He sends her many pictures during his travels, and then the day he returns finally came. He greets Yuki using sign language, and then hands her an ugly-but-cute souvenir keychain.
After this cute scene, we do see a little bit more of Yuki’s childhood friend Oushi, however all he does is try and drag Yuki’s happiness down, so i’m choosing to ignore him~
Teaching Itsuomi sign language
We learn a little bit more about Yuki’s deafness after she and Rin visit Itsuomi at work, as he notices that she wears a hearing aid. She explains to him that when she wears the hearing aid, it’s like she hears all of the sounds happening around her all jumbled up as one sound. When she takes them off, she can hear nothing at all, she further explains.
A little while later, she hands Itsuomi a notebook she created in order to teach him sign language. Itsuomi accepts, but then asks her to teach him directly. She then teaches him the signs for “thank you” and “cute”.

Maddies Thoughts
This was SUCH a cute volume 1!! I love the pacing of the romance – I know it’s going to happen, but I love being able to watch Yuki and Itsuomi slowly get to know each other more and more.
I also think there was an appropriate amount of strife in this volume to keep it from being nothing but fluff – I dislike Oushi, but I do find him a good antagonist for Yuki and Itsuomi’s relationship.
Maddie’s Ratings
Fluffiness
Even though this was just the first volume, there was so much fluff!! There were so many cute moments between Itsuomi and Yuki that, while I wouldn’t consider them straight up romance, they are leading up to the eventual start of a relationship.
Romance
While there wasn’t any explicit romance in this volume, I do find Yuki and Itsuomi’s relationship to be that of two people who are aaaalmost dating. Like, you know that they will date, but they just aren’t dating yet. So, while they clearly have feelings for each other, they are still being rather careful.
Story-telling
I’m really enjoying the story-telling of this series so far! I appreciate that Itsuomi is able to go out and travel the world on his own, while Yuki is able to do whatever she wants to do.
I appreciate romance manga where the couple isn’t always glued at the hip, but are able to go out and be their own persons.
I also really liked how Yuki’s deafness was explained in this volume! I feel as though that if I were deaf, I would want to be able to communicate with those closest to me in sign language, however I am not, so I cannot comment on how Yuki may feel.
